99. GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967)

A film made 55 years ago that's almost as applicable today as it was at the time of its release. I haven't seen enough Sidney Poitier films but he's on point with his portrayal of Dr. John Prentice: he's extremely thoughtful and well mannered, humble, educated, respectful, etc. Meanwhile his finance (played by the lovely 22-year-old Katharine Houghton, niece of star Katharine Hepburn), Christina is a strong willed and free spirited young woman. Both sets of parents are extremely old fashioned in their thinking (although having grown up in difficult times themselves, who are we to judge by today's standards?), in particular both fathers. An obvious social commentary tale about acceptance, beliefs, and predisposed dispositions. 7/10

98. UNFORGIVEN (1992)

Only the second time I've seen this but I enjoyed it so much more this time around. Towering performances from the likes of Richard Harris and Gene Hackman, not to mention the fiery Frances Fisher. I'm not much of a western fan but this has jumped into my favorites. Solid story all around and the finest western made in quite a number of years prior to this. 8/10

97. BRINGING UP BABY (1938)

Hepburn owns the screen and every scene she's in. Her chemistry with Cary Grant is infectious and it's like watching teenagers fall in love. Some comedic moments still hold out after 84 years and I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to heading in to it. Hepburn doesn't look bad at 31 either! 7.5/10

96. THE SEARCHERS (1956)

John Ford was ahead of his time on this one: an absolute buffet for the eyes. Beautiful, natural scenery. Wonderful cinematography and framing on his shots. Excellent use of natural lighting. Not to mention John Wayne's performance as Ethan Edwards. Unfortunately, the world needs more of his kind today more than ever. Enjoyed this so much more a second time around! 8/10

95. PULP FICTION (1994)

What more can be said about this film that hasn't been said already? A true masterpiece in filmmaking, catapulting Tarantino to his current A-list status with a knockout cast, stellar soundtrack, and fantastically gripping story. This film almost improves upon itself after every viewing. 10/10

94. GOODFELLAS (1990)

The greatest mob movie of all-time alongside THE GODFATHER. Iconic performances by Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and Lorraine Bracco, not to mention a dynamite soundtrack to boot. Romanticized, engaging, and intriguing, this film can't help but to suck you in with its story (made all the more unbelievable that it's based on fact rather than fiction). Marty was screwed out of his Oscar by DANCES WITH WOLVES (REALLY!?) 10/10

I'll continue to update as I make my way through the list but I already know I've enjoyed some movies thus far (UNFORGIVEN, BRINGING UP BABY, and THE SEARCHERS) more a second time around than the first.

93. THE APARTMENT (1960)

A wonderful and original story about "buddy boy" C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) who rents his apartment to his 5 superiors in order to rise the ranks within his company but falls in love with elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine). A terrific trio of Lemmon, MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray as Jeff D. Sheldrake, Baxter's supreme boss. A romantic comedy nothing like the drivel we're supplied these days that relies more on romance than comedy (this relies more on comedy than romance). My only beef with the film is Lemmon professes his love for MacLaine over and over again and she never once reciprocates. 8.5/10

92. A PLACE IN THE SUN (1951)

This has been my least favorite of the list so far. Not a bad movie at all but did hold my engagement as much throughout. Honestly surprised it was ranked higher than some other films like GOODFELLAS & PULP FICTION for example. Still, an interesting conundrum for young George Eastman (Montgomery Clift), who knocks up fellow coworker Alice Tripp (Shelley Winters) but then falls madly for the wealthy Angela Vickers (Elizabeth Taylor) and attempts to leave Alice without tipping off Angela. 6.5/10

91. MY FAIR LADY (1964)

A little bit of a bloated musical with a number of good tunes and the performances by Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison made it all the more tolerable. 6.5/10

90. THE JAZZ SINGER (1927)

I understand the significance of this film in cinema history but stripping that away, the story is mostly meh. Yes, it's the first "talkie" but outside of that, there's nothing remarkable here. 5.5/10

89. PATTON (1970)

A towering performance by George C. Scott that's refreshing to see the Academy feel the same way and reward such an effort with an Oscar win. Today's world needs more General Patton's in it! The action scenes are lacking but that's not surprising being the film was released in 1970 (and I daresay they weren't known for their action scenes back then). Surprised to see Francis Ford Coppola as a writer on this however. 6/10

88. EASY RIDER (1969)

I've seen this twice now and other than the fact the story is a dichotomy between traditional values and "modern day" when the film was released, this hasn't done it for me either time. Peter Fonda is more enjoyable as the level headed Wyatt, whereas I'm not a big fan of Dennis Hopper's stoned-all-the time Billy. Good enough soundtrack with an appearance from Jack Nicholson to boot. But overall, I guess I must be missing the point here? 6/10

87. FRANKENSTEIN (1931)

91 years later and this film still holds up. The best adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel features iconic performances by both Boris Karloff (as The Monster) and Colin Clive (as Henry Frankenstein). A wonderful film at just 70 minutes. Sometimes, certain films don't need to be remade as they'll never top their predecessors (and this is one of them). 9/10

86. MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1935)

A head scratcher for me that this film made the list. A fine film for sure with a standout performance by Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh. However, one of the 100 greatest movies of all-time? I'd argue that opinion. 6/10

85. DUCK SOUP (1933)

This is definitely not my type of humor and even coming in at only 69 minutes, this was painful to get through. I'm sure audiences 91 years ago enjoyed this but I certainly didn't. 4/10

84. FARGO (1996)

Imagine my surprise to learn today this film is not in fact based upon a true story but is rather fictionalized. I'm not sure why the Coen Brothers lied to the audience at the beginning of this film but it's still a masterpiece nonetheless. Very happy to see William H. Macy win his Oscar for his memorable performance as Jerry Lundegaard. Fabulous storytelling throughout with a dynamite cast! 9/10

83. PLATOON (1986)

One of the best, not only films about Vietnam, but war in general. How Tom Berenger didn't win an Oscar for this I'll never know. A troubling tale about a divided platoon in 1969 Vietnam with a young and star-studded cast such as Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, Keith David, Tony Todd, Johnny Depp, and Berenger. 8/10

One of my favorites my parents bought a VHS Videorecorder and this was the first movie we rented made a huge impression on me.

Took a break from the AFI list today to rewatch AVATAR before seeing the sequel tomorrow. Still not too excited going in to it, and perhaps I'll eat my words. But I wouldn't bet against James Cameron, I'm just not that excited about the idea of a sequel (nor do I know of anyone particularly clamoring for one, but we shall see).

Also, anyone with Peacock, I recommend watching CASEY ANTHONY: WHERE THE TRUTH LIES. 3 part documentary series where Casey gives her first onscreen interview since her acquittal over 10 years ago. I didn't know much about the case beforehand (I just knew she was convicted in the court of public opinion of killing her 3-year-old daughter). However, the documentary changed my mind about it.

A lawyer friend of mine schooled me on that case a few years back. Like the rest of the world I had been drinking the media Kool-Aid, totally on board with the idea that Casey Anthony was a horrible human who deserved the death penalty. There is no doubt in my mind that she and her kid were abused by her monster of a father. I've not seen the documentary, but I have a feeling it will change A LOT of peoples minds, thankfully. A couple of friends of mine have came around as well. I can't even begin to imagine what that woman has gone through.

I agree, the media storm is what did it for me (that and the allegations against her father).

82. GIANT (1956)

Apparently either director George Stevens or writer Edna Ferber's love letter to Texas. A big budget production the likes of which Hollywood no longer caters to unfortunately. Even with a runtime of 3 hours and 21 minutes, the story and film never seem to drag. Outstanding performances by the three leads: Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean. Unfortunately, this was Dean's last film and we're always left wondering what might have been. At just 24 years old, he strings together a memorable performance by ranch hand turned oil billionaire Jett Rink. I found myself wondering while watching this just how much more rich Hudson's Jordan Benedict would have been had he discovered the oil on his property rather than Jett? A little surprised they didn't have an intermission either. 7.5/10

One of the greatest movies of the 1950s. I remember watching Giant with my beautiful grandmother when I was just a kid and saying to her that one day I was gonna be just like Jett Rink lol
