To me Donnie Brasco is top-of-the-line, I think it was darker and nastier than Goodfellas and Casino because of the lack of narration and classic music, which seemed to lighten up those other movies and make them almost comical.

You're not mistaken, yet it is always referred to as one. At the time it came out no one saw it as a mob movie, but as a character study. The people in it were nuts, and Keitel's character did run numbers, but there was almost no mob references, aside from the uncle.

I like the Cagney ones but Bogart did a few good ones too. There was one with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster as bootlegger that was also pretty good. I think he Cagney ones were tops.

The Godfather is not only the greatest mob movie of all time, it's the greatest movie of all time.

Second greatest movie of all time is Part 2. Nothing beats the story, the detail, the pacing, the casting and the acting in both films.

I agree, on both fronts.

For all you trivia buffs:

First time that an original motion picture and it's sequel both won Best Picture Oscars - Godfather 1 & 2.

First time that 2 different actors won an Oscar fer portraying the same character - Godfather 1 - Brando (Best Actor) and Godfather 2 - DeNiro (Best supporting Actor) for Vito Corleone.

First time that an actor won an Oscar for speaking primarily in a foreign language (Sicilian dialect) Godfather 2 - DeNiro.for Vito Corleone

What about Last Man Standing, not a true story but still good. Also Road to Perdition.

Not sure it was brought up, but what is everyone's thoughts on Once Upon A Time in America? I am NOT nominating it for best Mob movie by any means, I agree with the top choices, but I always found it entertaining.
Directed by Sergio Leone, his last movie, and starring De Niro and James Woods with Joe Pesci also.
And I know its not the "Italian Mafia"
It always made me think of Luciano, Lanskey, etc, young friends who grow up to be crime bosses.
Curious what everyone else thinks about that movie.

Yes, it was definitely loosely based on Luciano and his Jewish gangster pals, I don't care what anyone says.

Once Upon A Time in America is an excellent film.

I will split a semantic hair and say that while it may not be a "Mafia" movie, it certainly is an epic "Mob" movie.

Whoever found the kid that portrays James Woods as a teen was a casting genius.

Maybe it's my juvenile mindset, but one of my favorite scenes is where Burt Young is relating the story of his "special" insurance policy.

Sergio Leone was devastated when the Americans released the first version in theaters what were they thinking??
The director's cut is a masterpiece. It received a raucous, record-breaking ovation of nearly 20 minutes at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival (reportedly heard by diners at restaurants across the street from the Palais)

Not many saying Witness to the mob. Its not the best mob movie but for a made for TV film, its great. Then again the book it's based on is the best mob book ever. We all agree !!
