He started out as just another seemingly dime a dozen young Greenwich Village street thug. But The Chin was so much more than what he looked like. According to Rita Gigante's book, Chin's brother Patsy Gigante was not married and lived with a "roommate". The whole family knew but they pretended not to know. Patsy was smart enough not to bring his partner to family functions.
The Chin knew his brother was gay but he let it slide because Patsy, being eldest, took a lot of a beating from their violent father and he would often protect his little brothers.
