Hi,
I want to create a list of real Mafia movies, everytime I look on the net for the them I find lists of general "mob" movies, but I want a list of specifically mafia related movies. Off the top of my head I have:

The Godfather I, II & III
Goodfellas
Casino
A Bronx Tale
Key Largo
Carlito's Way
Donnie Brasco
Mean Streets
Untouchables

I'm not including spoof crap like Mafia! or Analyse This, just serious movies relating to the mafia. Can anyone add any more? Despite Carlito's Way being about a Puerto Rican gangster, the Mafia are quite involved in the story towards the end.

Speaking strictly "Mafia" movies, you may consider buying:

"Bugsy" - starring Warren Beatty as Bugsy Siegel
"Gotti" - starring Armand Assante as John Gotti
"Honor Thy Father" - about the Bonnano Family
"Lansky" - starring Richard Dreyfuss as Meyer Lansky
"Mobsters" - Christian Slater as Lucky Luciano; Anthony Quinn steals the movie as Joe 'The Boss' Masseria
"Murder, Inc." - highlighted by Peter Falk as Abe Reles
"The Valachi Papers" - poor film about Joe Valachi ratting out the Mob

.

Not strictly Mafia but close enough:

"Once Upon a Time in America" - stars Robert DeNiro; great flick
"On the Waterfront" - Marlon Brando's great portrayal of a washed-up boxer and the Mob
"Billy Bathgate" - Dustin Hoffman plays an underling to Dutch Schultz
"Hoodlum" - black gangsters in 1930's New York; some good Mafia stuff included

.

"The Brotherhood" (not bad GF predecessor with Kirk Douglas).
Original "Scarface" (Paul Muni, George Raft, Boris Karloff(!!), a Capone-type film.
"Al Capone" (the great Rod Steiger's greatest performance).
"St. Valentine's Day Massacre" (superior Corman super-B-movie).

Also, Death Collecter, otherwise known as Family Enforcer is another pretty weel done independent film from the 70's I believe, staring a young Joe Pesci and Afro infested Frank Vincent.

Then there is another independent film, Mob War, staring the actual Jake La Motta (whom Robert De Niro portrayed in Raging Bull). Its actually a pretty horrible movie, in my opinion, but you weren't asking for good Mafia flicks.

some not so popular films, but still true mafia:

The Youngest Godfather: (canada) Joe Bonano Family
The Last Don I and II: Based on the novel by Mario Puso
Hoffa: Jimmy Hoffa and the labor unions

Bart, Is it wrong to steal a loaf of bread to feed your starving family? No. Well suppose you got a large starving family, is it wrong to steal a truckload of bread to feed them? Uh-uh. And what if your family don't like bread, they like cigarettes? I guess thats ok. Now what if instead of giving them away, you sold them at a price that was practically giving them away. Would that be a crime Bart?

I'm not sure that Carlito's Way belongs in your list. But add Love, Honor, and Obey with Eric Roberts and Sugartime about Sam Giancana. What about Analyze This?

Yeah I'm going for a list of serious movies - I'd forgotten about this post actually and now I look there are some really good replies. I added Carlito's Way because I thought that if I added The Untouchables, which is technically about a group of policemen, then Carlito's Way probably has as much right to be in the list. Anyway, here's a new draft of my list thanks to everyone else's comments:

The Godfather I, II & III
Goodfellas
Casino
A Bronx Tale
Key Largo
Carlito's Way
Donnie Brasco
Mean Streets
Untouchables
Bugsy
Gotti
Honor Thy Father
Lansky
Mobsters
Murder, Inc.
The Valachi Papers
The Brotherhood
Scarface 1932
Al Capone
St. Valentine's Day Massacre
Death Collecter/Family Enforcer
Mob War
The Youngest Godfather
The Last Don I & II
Hoffa

BTW Has anyone seen "The Sicilian" with Christopher Lambert? Should that be included? I seem to remember the book having Michael Corleone in it but I've never seen the film.

although it does take place in the italian area of new york and is directed by Scorcese, I dont feel Mean Streets is real Mob movie, simply because of the content, none of the main characters are in the mob at all, and it has more to do with growing up in the city than organized crime.

Hi, i'm new to this forum.
I wanted to say you should add 'Road to Perdition' to your list, starring Tom Hanks.

Hello,
Welcome to the forums. I haven't seen RTP for years, but I seem to remember all the gangsters being Irish, were there any Italian mafia involved?

Worth a watch; involving, though somewhat amateurish in parts.

Disappointing. Notable mostly for the acting role of actual Luciano pursuer playing, essentially, himself.

Excellent, particularly for a TV production. Infinitely superior to "Gotti".

Dull and stretched more than Kid Twist Reles's rope. Turn up the sound to hear the names of Gotti and Gravano, or you won't guess who plays them. If the pair were played by black or Asian actors, they would probably resemble the real characters more than this film's versions do.

Solid video entry. Interesting due to showing a very opposite side to that presented in "Mad Dog Coll", even though it has the same cast and was shot at the same time (in "Mad Dog", Coll is the romantic protagonist and Dutch is the greedy, ruthless villain; here, the roles are essentially reversed).

Excellent for a video production, though highly romanticized and whitewashed (not to mention that it makes Vince Coll look about 70 times more handsome than in reality...). In that respect, it has more in common with "Goodfellas" or "Mobsters" than an actual biography. Apparently retitled to "Killer Instinct" in USA, probably because there already was a "Mad Dog Coll".

Dull and ultimately pointless, with possibly the worst screen "Gotti" found outside bad "documentary" reenactments... at least until "Boss of Bosses" came out.

Awful reenactment of the Vario/Burke Lufthansa robbery. If James Burke were played by Elizabeth Taylor, she would still make a more realistic counterpart than Donald Sutherland does.

i've just finished watching Mafia Empire, received it in my mail box yesterday. i'm still waiting for Crime Inc. btw, i'm from the Netherlands, and i dont know if this was released in the US.

Mafia Empire was pretty nice, it covered the mafia from the 1930's up to now, and covered Sicily as well as NY.

I'm glad noone brought up Scarface(1983). It's a good movie, but it's definitely not a mob material. It's a cult classic. I've read so many things on the internet that Scarface(83) was a good mob movie. That makes me mad because it has nothing to do with the mafia. It's about a Cuban and Coke. Nothing to do with Mafia. I'll give Al Pacino alot of credit for the film, though.

You know, we always called each other good fellas. Like you said to, uh, somebody, :You're gonna like this guy. He's all right. He's a good fella. He's one of us.: You understand? We were good fellas.

Personally, the production values on Gotti alone put it over the top for me. Not to mention the acting, Nick Turturro and Abe Vigoda alone cant hold a candle to Armand Assante, Forsythe (sp?), and Anthony Quinn. Much better, Im surprised people can even make a comparison.

What about The Cotton Club, not a bad movie, plus it's the first time you see Laurance Fishburns charecter Bumpy from Hoodlum. And did anybody mention Billy Bathgate.
