Does anyone know if they're gonna re-release Casino on DVD? I posted something on this a few months ago, and yet I still cannot find a new copy of this DVD, ANYWHERE. It's driving me bananas! I've wanted this DVD for so long. Thanks in advance.

I've never actually seen Casino. In comparison with Goodfellas, how good is it?

Both are good movies, both are based on true (or so it is said*) events. I'm a little confused as to why the names were changed in Casino though.

* The trueness of Casino is now in doubt due to the article I posted here

I came, I saw, I had no idea what was going on, I left.

Goodfellas is better, IMO, although both films are incredible. The subject matter is similar, but I prefer Goodfellas because it shows Mafia life at the foot-soldier level, and by no means glamorizes it. You get to see the guys who do the dirty work actually do the dirty work.

"Casino" doesn't have the bang-bang quick action of "Goodfellas," or the mordant humor. Instead, you get a long, thoughtful, richly detailed view of the Mob's involvement in Vegas in the Seventies. You also get DeNiro's best performance since "Goodfellas," another patented Pesci vicious character, and the usual first-class Scorsese casting--especially James Woods, the Sultan of Smarm, and Don Rickles. But the movie's almost stolen by Sharon Stone, who puts in a great performance as DeNiro's wife--progressively more debased, debauched and frightening.
Overall: If I had to take one of the two to a desert island, it'd be "Goodfellas." But "Casino" is a solid second.

some people said Casino was just Scorsese's attempt to recreate Goodfellas, but this time in Vegas without Ray Liotta. I personally feel like Casino is different enough fro Goodfellas that its comparison was undeserved. I personally wish Scorses would do more mob movies. It does seem to be the same basic setup at some parts though; quiet and traditional DeNiro trying to reign in wild and crazy Pesci. Yes it may be copying a bit off of Goodfellas, but it still works beautifully.

RE: Casino vs Goodfellas, Just watched Goodfellas again and although I love the film I question the accuracy of Henry Hill's recollections. When you think about it, he plays a very secondary role within a structure that doesn't cut a lot of slack to secondary players. Hill never gets his hands real dirty. Except for knocking that punk of a neighbor off his pins for attacking his girl, Henry is fairly passive. Love Casino for it's gritty (and I suspect) more accurate portrayal of Mob violence. Although there are still a few scenes I haven't watched since I first saw it in the theatre, the sound effects are enough for me. Sharon Stone is perfect in this film and James Wood is soooo slimy. Ofcourse Deniro is excellent and it's nice to see Rickles in a serious role.

I've posted before saying that I prefer Casino over Goodfellas. After having just watched Goodfellas, now I'm not so sure. Both have so many good qualities:
1) great supporting actors: Casino with Rickles, Woods, and Stone and GF with Sorvino and Bracco.
2) both have annoying wife characters: Bracco & Stone
3) both have at least 1 set of brutal killings

I guess why I'm leaning more toward GF now is the acting of Paul Sorvino. He played his character flawlessly. From the slap on the face to Henry warning Hill about not doing drugs, to the way he pronounced "sang-wiches" in prison, Sorvino was a perfect mob captain.

Both seemed to drag a little bit at the end, in Casino with Sharon Stone rampaging the cars and her house, and GF with Henry being so paranoid about the helicopter and the events of that entire day.
