What in your opinion is Martin Scorcere best film?
As for me I would have to say Goodfellas, its my favourite movie of all time, it has loads of violence and its stars possibly 3 of the best actors around Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. Definetly Scorcece's finest work.
My favourites are:
1. Goodfellas
2. Raging Bull
3. Taxi Driver
4. Casino
5. King of Comedy
6. Gangs of New York
7. Mean Streets

Who's this "Scorcere" guy? :p

I rank Martin Scorsese's best films in the following order (with the four star rating next to them, as well as the 10/10 system)...

1. Taxi Driver **** (10/10)
2. Mean Streets **** (10/10)
3. GoodFellas **** (9.5/10)
4. Raging Bull **** (9/10)
5. The King of Comedy (9/10)
6. Casino **** (9/10)
7. Gangs of New York *** (8/10)
8. Cape Fear *** (8/10)
9. The Color of Money *** (7.5/10)
10. Martin Scorsese Presents: The Blues; Feel Like Going Home *** (7.5/10)
11. Bringing Out the Dead * (6/10)

Possibly my favourite director ever, and certainly one of the best in the past 30 years. In terms of camera movement, he is unsurpassed.

Still need to see: After Hours, The Age of Innocence, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Boxcar Bertha, What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?, The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, The Big Shave, ItalianAmerican.

well there is Scorsese's universally-proclaimed 4 masterpieces of MEAN STREETS, TAXI DRIVER, GOODFELLAS, and RAGING BULL....but I also dug AFTER HOURS, CASINO, LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST(Scorsese's most underrated film), and so on. I even liked GANGS OF NEW YORK, even if it was pretty flawed.

But GOODFELLAS is Scorsese's best movie for sure, with TAXI DRIVER right on its heels.

It's a shame Mean Streets is a rare movie for many people to have seen.

1) Goodfellas
2) Taxi Driver
3) Raging Bull
4) Mean Streets
5) Casino
6) Cape Fear
7) Gangs of New York

Gangs of New York may be last but it's not bad at all, I loved it.

GoodFellas and The King of Comedy are my favorites, and I'm sure that when I get to watch Taxi Driver and Raging Bull they will join this list.

I saw Mean Streets I believe twice & thought they weren't even comparable with Goodfellas or Raging Bull. But that's just my opinion. I also watched Boxcar Bertha a couple of weekends ago & thought that was terrible

1. Taxi Driver- The ultimate psychological film, with Travis Bickle, arguably the most in depth and most provocative character ever.

2. Goodfellas- The ultimate gangster movie.

3. Ragingbull- Perfect portrayl of Jake Lomatta and his rocky career as a champion boxer.

4. After Hours- I have just recently viewed this stunningly brilliant dark comedy. I believe it is one of the most underrated movies ever, and I urge you all to see it.

5. Mean Streets- Scorseses breakthrough film is arguably his most artistic and definetly one of his best. DeNiro and Keitel give great performances.

6. Casino- Goodfellas taken down a notch.

7. Cape Fear- Good movie with an amazing performance by DeNiro.

8. Color of Money- Newman makes this a good film, but Cruise does nothing but hurt the integrity of the film IMO. Not even close to the original.

I know that I'm the only one who feels this way, but I think Scorsese's technical flair is pretty overrated. He's made so many great movies, and in my opinion, is cinema's greatest storyteller, but there are plenty of filmmakers more talented technically than him. The direction in Raging Bull is absolutely perfect, I admire many scenes in Mean Streets and Casino, and there are a few memorable images in the rest of his films, but compared to the likes of Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, Terrence Malick, Federico Fellini, and Jean-Luc Godard, his films are visually unimpressive.

That said, he is a master of cinema.

Gangs of New York was a good flick. Not quite and "epic", but on a large scale nonetheless. Granted I haven't seen much of his early work, but I have to say Goodfellas is the best I've seen of his.

How could I have forgotten Taxi Driver and Casino?! This just isn't my day. Anyway, This is like picking my favorite child, because they're all fantastic films in their own right. I'm sticking with Goodfellas, but I still can't beleive I left these two classics out!

That's in the order of "my favorites", but I rate "Mean Streets" as a better film than "Casino". I just like "Casino" better because of the subject matter.

And I agree with Ragging Bull about "After Hours". I'm not as gushing with my praise over it, but it is very under-rated and I highly recommend it.

Thing is, though, I think you have to be a New Yorker to truly appreciate it entirely.

What is After Hours about? In fact, what are all of the movies about in the Scorsese collection (except Goodfellas & Mean Streets. I've seen both & own Goodfellas, but I've never seen any of the others). What's After Hours about? What's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore about? What's Who's That Knocking at My Door about??

After Hours-A man goes into SoHo to meet a woman. After realizing he wants nothing to do with that girl he tries to make his way home, something that will tale him the entire night to do.
10/10 Very funny. You should definately see it

Alice Doesnt Live Here Anymore- A woman, who has lived her life simply as the "wife" is forced to make a living to support herself and her son. She makes an attempt to go back to Monerae and make it as a singer.
5.5/10 Although I do like what Scorsese did with the picture(editing, etc)I cannot stand the story,I find it very boring. It feels like a story they put on Lifetime.A 40 something woman I think would enjoy it more than me.

Who's That Knocking At My Door?- This was his student film at NYU that was periodicly added onto.It basically tells the story of a guy in New York who meets an educated girl.
7/10 Tells a good story, but I think some of it can be confusing and irrelivant.

Grazie Don Sonny Corleone! I've heard some good things about After Hours on her but I can't seem to find it to rent & I have a TON of other stuff to watch first. But when I get the chance to, I'd love to check it out. Thanks again.

Goodfella, I thought The Last Temptation was pretty sweet, or at least the ending. It is a difficult movie to find since Blockbuster years ago said they would never carry it in there stores & now we have one in our Blockbuster store near us. I would try Netflix and if not, keep trying video stores. I know BestBuy sells it, or again maybe it's just the BestBuy near me for $30. It's pretty expensive but that's just because it's so hard to find. I LOVE Willam Dafoe & thought he did a good job as Jesus & Marty did he usual thing. The only thing I should warn you about, that got A LOT of people so upset and it was something so small, but this movie is a FICTIONAL portral of Christ. It's not like The Passion of the Christ where the movie is based off of scriptures. This movie was adopted from a book and it's a fictional portral of Christ. As long as you go into the movie knowing that, then you should enjoy it. I myself am a Christian & was not offended at all by this movie, like so many others have been.

The last temptation of christ is based in a novel by nikkos kazantzakis. I really liked a lot and I think is a good way (fictional or not) to show the life of jesus christ, cuz after all he was human, so maybe he lived like one, who knows?, that´s only my personal opinion, anyway is a good movie, maybe you can try the criterion version, cuz It´s looks pretty good and have some cool extras.

Btw, dafoe was pretty good, keitel too.

Angie, your Scorsese list is enviable. I'm gonna have to try and hunt down his pre-Mean Streets stuff; that boxset of his isn't available over here. The Age of Innocence is somewhat cheap here, but I have to be in the mood for a period drama. The Last Temptation of Christ is expensive here, too, but not hard to find at all.

UPDATED LIST. #'s 1-5 are all four star films.

1) Taxi Driver
2) Raging Bull
3) Mean Streets
4) Goodfellas
5) Casino
6) The Last Waltz
7) The Aviator
8) Cape Fear
9) Gangs of New York
10) Bringing Out the Dead
11) Boxcar Bertha

While Goodfellas is a masterpiece of style, the top three: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Mean Streets are all films I can never stop thinking about when I see them. They are among the best films art-wise, especially Taxi Driver, which is definitely one of greatest character studies (if not the best).
