My favourites are Sergei Eisenstein, Stanley Kubrick, Francois Truffaut and Akira Kurosawa.

Hitchcock, Kurosawa, and Coppola. I like many others like Scorsese, Stone, and Wells.

Filmbuff, you have interesting tastes. I am not familiar with Eisenstein, I have never seen any of Truffaut's films (though I have heard great things about "The 400 Blows"), and as you can see, I am a fan of Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Ran, and his little known "Dreams"). But I am not a fan of Kubrick. I found "The Shining" boring (sorry Anthony), and I thought "2001..." was beautiful, but very strange (parts of the end look like a drug trip). But if I had to chose a Kubrick film I really liked, it would be "Lolita". This bizarre little film (with a hint of Film-Noir) is my favorite of Kubricks, and his most underrated film.

i have some but i'll go with Martin Scorsese all the way! most of my favorite movies are directed by him, he's the real "Mafia Movie" Director for me. FFC comes close to second. . .

Scorsese, Coppola, and Speilberg, for sure. But I also like Michael Mann (Heat), Brian De Palma, and John Woo. I'm gonna be keepin' my eye on Conrad L. Hall, too, the Road to Perdition director. Anyone who can take a mere graphic comic book and create something as phenomenal as that definitely has an eye for directing!

Admittedly, I like some of the pictures directed by "Opie" (Ron Howard)...that little red-headed kid from The Andy Griffith Show has sure come a long way!

I've just realised no one excluded TV directors. So...
David Chase
David Lynch (for Twin Peaks)
Jon Cassar, Rodney Charters, Davis Guggenheim, Stephen Hopkins,Frederick King Keller, Winrich Kolbe, Paul Shapiro, Bryan Spicer, Ian Toynton and James Whitmore Jr. (all for 24)

Ron Howard directed Gladiator ?!

My favourite director is Quentin Tarantino. I also admire Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and Francis Ford Coppolla (of course).

Conrad L. Hall was actually the cinematographer for "Road to Perdition" and he is up for an Oscar. Sadly though, he died a few monthes back. The director was Sam Mendes, who also did a great job.

And Ron Howard didn't direct "Gladiator", that was Ridely Scott (Alien, Black Hawk Down).

I've never seen any of his films, but hopefully I will soon, along with "The Deer Hunter".

My bad, Omar! That's what happens when you ask your son to read it off the DVD box to you rather than checking IMDB yourself! Anyway, yeah, Mendes did an outstanding job, as did Hall. The cinematography stood out to me as much as the story and acting did, and not many films can do that to the audience. Hate to hear of Hall's death, though.

(BTW: I think you'll dig The Deer Hunter.)

Anthony Lombardi: The only movie I've seen from start-to-finish of Tarantino's was Reservoir Dogs, which I thought was fairly good. I've only seen parts of Pulp Fiction (like the famous "WHAT?!?" scene ), but I swear I'm gonna sit down and watch the whole thing one of these days!

DOH!

I must be thinking of A Beautiful Mind. He directed that, didn't he?

Yeah, Reservoir Dogs is number four on my list of favorites. And you REALLY gotta see Pulp Fiction! It's number ONE on my favorites list.
