The rape scenes in "The Generals Daughter", "The Accused" and "Pulp Fiction" were disturbing to me. So was the scene in "Last Exit to Brooklyn" when Tra La La has the whole neighborhood waiting in line to have sex with her.

The scene in "American History X" where he makes the guy lie on the ground and put his open mouth on the curb then smashes his head with his boot was awful, but it was an excellent movie.

The scene in "The Exorcist" with the little girl and the crucifix was almost too much as was just about all of "End of Days", "Natural Born Killers" and "kalifornia".

You're right about those rape scenes, Scarlett. One that was even worse was Dr. Melfi's rape in season 2 of "Sopranos."

Luckily we don't have HBO or I probably would have had that one on the list too!

There was an awful, horrible video I rented maybe about 6 or 7 years ago, maybe some of you have seen it, luckily I can't remember the title of it, when I rented it I thought it was one of those crime shows kind of like "Cops", but hardly.
It was clips of video surveillance cameras and regular police crime scene videos. It had a scene of the police raiding the house of some Satanists who had body parts in their sink, a surveillance camera video of some poor guys who tried to break into a junkyard getting killed by the dogs guarding it and one of some guy who recorded rapes he'd done.
I took it back to the video store and the lady who owned the store took it off the shelves after I told her what was in it.
Still afects me when I think about it.

You know.. I guess it's a weird thing to say or feel maybe even but, rape scenes just don't bother me. It's not to say that I don't think they are horrible or extremely traumatic. But to me when you say "most violent scene " I don't think of rape. Rape to me is a mental invasion so much more then a physical one. It's a control thing.
I don't want anyone to misconstrue what I'm saying, I think rape is a barbaric and terrible crime.. I just don't think it's the most violent..

I agree with a lot of those mentioned. I remember when the movie "Bonnie and Clyde" came out. The shoot-out scene at the very end was quite a spectacle, seemingly lasting a long time. For the time it was considered very violent.

I don't have a favorite, but this is a list of movies that I usually turn my head when a violent scene appears. There must be a thin line b/w violence and gore.
I have to agree that battle scenes of Gladiator, private ryan, windtalkers, Gangs of NY, braveheart were a bit violent.

I thought Aliens and Preditor was up there in the gore category.

But for single Kills: American X (curb scene), NBK, scarface (bathroom scene), Interview with Vampire, Hammibal (dinner scene)

For rape scenes the ones in A Clockwork Orange, Pulp Fiction, Once Apon A Time In America and Deliverance were quite full-on.

As for violence, Nicky and his brother getting the shit beaten out of them was one of the worst, although the most disturbing part was seeing them getting buried while still half-alive. Utterly terrible.
In A Clockwork Orange when Alex is taken into the field by Georgie and Dim, dunked in the trough and beaten up his quite violent.
In Pulp Fiction, almost everything in the "Gold Watch" section is pretty violent.
In Gladiator and Braveheart the fight scenes are quite violent.
In The Shining the eleavtor pouring with blood, despite not being violent, is still f*cking scary, also when Halloran gets an axe in the chest.
In GoodFellas the opening, and speaking of openings, Savign Private Ryan's was pretty gruesome.
In Pulp Fiction in the car where Vincent accidently shoots Marvin in the face (the state of the car is the worse thing).

and

Reservoir Dogs, I'm surprised no-one mentioned the torture sequence (although there are probably worse ones around.)

-Penguin

Also is American History X worth taking a look at?

I'd say scenes from Platoon, Saving Pvt. Ryan, Hamburger Hill, Godfather (that part where Sonny got shot, where Sonny was beating up Carlo), Gladiator, Rambo series and Pulp Fiction are the some of the most violent I've seen.

Opening Scene For gangs of new york. I knew it was going to be mentioned. The whole movie is the most violent movie i have ever seen and that is possibly out there. It makes Goodfellas and Casino look like family tv.

I saw Martin talking on Conan O'brien about what conservatives and critics thought of Goodfellas and how it was an inresponsible movie they thought. He definatly did not hold anything back on Gangs Of New York back.

i tend not to class war scenes as violent--don't know why, i think that it's because those are required in a war, whereas in a normal movie the violence is emphasised by the fact that it doesn't have to be committed.

some more violent scenes i've thought of:
the hammer and hook scenes in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
the end scene of soldier blue.
the child molesting scene in Sleepers--don't actually see it but it sounds distressing!
the killing of Stacks in Goodfellas--see the blood?

Here's one that no one thought of: In the Hitchcock movie "Torn Curtain", when Paul Newman killed a man by first stabbing him then finishing him off by sticking his head in the oven!!!
That may not be the most Violent scene in a movie, but it is very realistic and shows how hard it is to kill a man both physically and emotionally.

Joe Pesci getting beaten and buried on top of his brother in Casino takes the cake.

That movie was pretty violent, what with Joe Pesci STABBING A GUY IN THE NECK WITH A PEN. That was the second most violent scene in that movie. I mean, that's f*cking brutal!

Goodfellas, when theyre kicking the guy to death in the bar was kinda shocking. And then Pesci stabs him in the trunk of the car...

The ending to Mean Streets wouldnt be that bad if it wasn't so realistic. DeNiro running around with a bullet in his neck or whatever, and the girls arms is sticking out of the windshield.

Gangs Of New York, when Bill the Butcher bashes the guy in the head with the mallot is pretty bad, too.

Martin Scorcese is a violent guy!

And if anyone saw Carlito's Way, the part when Sean Penn (the lawyer) bashes the Mafia boss on the head until it breaks open and blood pours out was surprising violent for that movie.

ps. that scene was terrible, how the camera stays on melfi's face as she gets raped. hard decision to take by chase, but it's the right one for making the scen as brutal and realistic as possible.

There are a lot of violent scenes put in cinema. I don't know if things really disturb me, but I remember stuff. The Godfather, of course with such scenes as Sonny's brutal murder and the Baptisimal killings (Moe Green). The first half-hour of Saving Private Ryan and many people have stated how they were actually moreover disturbed by the fight between the two soldiers in that building in that last forty-five minutes. In Gladiator, that first battle in the arena where one of the slaves wets himself and finds himself speared to death along with a lot of other massacreing. There's a shot in We Were Soldiers where a soldier who has been blown away is carried to a helicopter as he screams with most of his face burned off. With Gangs of New York, I don't know why becuase I knew what was gonna happen, but it depressed me in the first scene that these two gangs were fighting so casually with the intent to kill each other. In modern gang warfare, if just one guy ends up dead after a brawl, it's considered a big deal, but to think that back then it could be considered so normal is rather disheartening.
