`Mafia` latest crime pickup from S. Korea
Daily Variety

Warner Bros. closed a deal Friday for remake rights to "Marrying the Mafia," Korea`s top-grossing film of the year. It becomes the latest deal in a growing Asian crime-pic wave of remake sales.

In "Marrying the Mafia," a lawyer finds himself in hot water after awakening from a one-night stand to discover that his bedmate is the daughter of a mob kingpin. The lawyer`s given the choice of marriage or extinction.

The film rights were taken to the marketplace last week by Vertigo Entertainment`s Roy Lee and Doug Davison. Two other studios bid, but WB sealed the deal with Josh Lee of the Korea-based financier and distributor Cinema Service. WB exec Dan Lin will supervise development, and the studio will assign it to a producer shortly. Tae Won Chung comes attached as co-producer.

Korea, like most of Asia, has proved fertile ground for Hollywood`s current remake frenzy: Five remake deals for Korean films have been made this year alone. Korean deal is the second for WB, which is also remaking "Il Mare." Studio also recently closed a deal to remake the 1998 Hong Kong martial arts comedy "Hitman," with Mark Perez writing.

Miramax is also in the gangland mode, setting "Serendipity" scribe Marc Klein to adapt the Korean pic "My Wife Is a Gangster."

Vertigo`s Lee and Davison, who were exec producers on DreamWorks hit horror remake "The Ring," have been involved in all those remake deals, as well as the Paramount and Cruise/Wagner Prods. pact for the Thai-Hong Kong co-production "The Eye" and Universal`s deal to remake the Japanese film "Chaos" as a directing vehicle for Jonathan Glazer ("Sexy Beast"). Benicio Del Toro and Robert De Niro are attached to star in the latter drama. For more information, please visit http://www.variety.com

eh doesn't seem very appealing , at least to me. I am not very interested in Asian nor anyother "Mafia's" that don't have anything to do w/ the Italian/Sicilian Mafia, but you never know.

Never knew there was a Korean Mafia. Knew about the Italian Mafia, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish..I guess there are elements of organized crime in a lot of cultures.
