I was watching godfather the other day. And I was looking at the deleted scenes when young Vito meets Roth for the first time. When Vito asks him who is the guy you look up to. and he said arthur rothstien(im not sure of the name) because he fixed the world series in 1919. but when you click on the scene it tells us the scene took place in 1918.can you guys tell more on that.

Leave the gun and take the canoli.

Where did it say that the scene was supposed to be in 1918? (The DVD has some notoriously bad "dates" added to the Extra disk).

The movie had it set that Vito killed Fanucci in either 1920 or 1921. That scene (with a young Hyman Roth) took place after Fanucci was killed.

As SC said, the dates are all screwed up on the extra scenes. But, Rudik, you're inferring a mistake that isn't a mistake:
The written intro to that deleted scene says "1917." The "Black Sox" scandal, in which Arnold Rothstein was alleged to have fixed the World Series, occurred in 1919. But Arnold Rothstein was one of the biggest underworld figures in New York way before the 1919 World Series. So, when Clemenza asked young Roth, "Who is the greatest man in the world to you?" and he replied, "Arnold Rothstein," the youngster didn't have to be referring to the 1919 Series scandal.
Later, when Michael calls on Roth in Miami in 1958, Roth says that he's been a big baseball fan "ever since Arnold Rothstein fixed the 1919 World Series." That's probably where your confusion originated.
Two other points:
First, Rothstein didn't fix the 1919 Series--Abe Attell, a crooked boxing figure, is usually mentioned as the fixer. But Rothstein knew about it and profited from the fix. The character "Meyer Wolfsheim," who appeared in the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel "The Great Gatsby," is based on Rothstein.
Second, in that deleted scene, "Roth" says his name is "Hyman Suchowsky." Then Clemenza says, "But we give him a better name" (which is how he became "Roth"). The real life Meyer Lansky, upon whom Roth is based, was born Maijer Suchowljansky.

Theres no way Hyman Roth would name himself as Hyman Roth in 1918. Hyman Schowsky *sp only took Arnold Rothstein's name because how he admired when Arnold Rothstein was accused of fixing the 1919 World Series. During the scene when young Vito meets Hyman by Clemenza, Clemenza propose to name Hyman "Johnny Lips" (I think, correct me if Im wrong). After thinking, Vito thought a name for him and became famous with "Hyman Roth."

For the record off point after my prior research in the past about Arnold Rothstein... I believe Arnold Rothstein was innocent and had no parts for the scandal of 1919 World Series. Rothstein was famous for making large bets before that and people got out of hand by saying Rothstein started the bets for the World Series. If Rothstein wanted to fix the World Series or make a bet, he would have proudly said he did it but he repeately denied having a thing to do with it. Just few years later, he was shot dead after owning some gamblers large sum of money.

Read Turnbull's "accurate" explaination ( above ) in regards to how he was given the name Hyman Roth. As Turnbull pointed out, there is no reference in that scene to the 1919 Black Sox Scandal.

Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.
