I just caught an airing of 'Pulp Fiction' on AMC...gosh what a FABULOUS film that is!

Now...they're playing one of my all time favorites, 'Fargo'.

Can't go wrong with that 'true-coat'.

So, what was in the briefcase, Apple??? I've heard a number of theories over the years, but I don't believe I've ever seen it discussed in the forums.

Heroin was probably in the case. Very....shiney.....heroin.

Anyway, the only way to see Pulp Fiction is on DVD or cable rather then AMC and their edits. Excellent film though.

I wondered what was in the suitcase too...but not for long. Really doesn't matter to me anymore than who opened the drapes.

I agree about the 'edits', DV. Similar to watching 'Casino' or 'Goodfellas' on tv.

But it was fun to watch the movie again, just the same.

One of my favorite scenes from Pulp Fiction is Christopher Walken talking about the watch and the final scene where Samuel jackson says that "path of the righteous man" dialogue. Funny everytime I watch it.

My personal favorite is when Vincent brings the boss's wife to the drug dealer's house for the adrenalin shot.
What a riot!

Next to that...'The Bonnie Situation'.

I revisted Pulp Fiction not too long ago. Immediately after viewing, I concluded that it is a great film, but no longer held that shine which once made me rate it a masterpiece. The morning after, I resumed the notion that it is actually inimitable.

I think, for pure satisfaction purposes, that "The Gold Watch" is my favourite part. It's wordy, moderately paced in comparison to the rest of the film, but has a lot of gusto, and makes blood fashionable. Marcellus Wallace staggering after a limping Butch is hilarious. And Walken's monologue is the best turn in the film.

My database entry reads thus:

"Responsible, so far, for an endless list of imitations, though this clever, verbose and thoroughly self-indulgent piece remains incomparable. It is a confident mix of written wit and complimentary visuals; first viewings offer laughs and pleasure in the script, but it's Tarantino's camera, perhaps overlooked at first, which cranks up the aesthetic."

Marcellus's soul is in the briefcase. I cant remember all the evidence for why this is true but it is. The only thing I remember is that the bandaid was on the back of his neck and that is where the soul was extracted or something. You can look the rest of the shit up online.

That's a theory which is just as dismissable as all the others. It could be anything, and quite frankly, when watching the film, I couldn't care less what's in it. Nobody else seems to mind, so it obviously isn't supposed to be all that important.

I am a person who likes to tie things up neatly, even though life (and film) doesn't always work that way. That's why I am one of those people it bothers a bit. The same for Ronin, you never know what's in that briefcase either.

Christ, Rhames was wearing a bandaid to hide the scar from an operation or something. No soul. Plus, the Bible does not say the devil takes souls out from the back of the head.

Then you're forever chasing a vain cause. You must really get frustrated at Hitchcock and His Maguffins...? :p

You know...until watching again last night, I had forgotten that we never do see what's in the briefcase. At first I'd have guessed cold hard cash, but the 'glow' would suggest it's solid gold in some form, probably jewelry since blocks would be too heavy to carry in a briefcase.

Either way...it still doesn't really matter to me.

MacGuffins are simply plot devices. It doesn't matter what's in the cases. Besides, if QT had been foolish enough to reveal the contents of that briefcase, it would have cheapened the mysterious significance of the briefcase. Frakenheimer knew better as well with RONIN.

Then again, does it matter if all plot lines are actually explained to make sure that even the wheelchair-piloting people in the audience do understand it? Its like BATMAN BEGINS. Why does Christian Bale talk like a British Clint Eastwood as Bats? Use your imagination, or think shit out.

Or a major complaint I heard about Michael Mann's MIAMI VICE from this summer. Who is the mole within the FBI that the film hinges on? We never learn, and it never did matter if we learned who it was. Again, if Mann had been amateurish enough to uncloak the mole, he would risk himself of being a Michael Bay or Joel Schumacher(either of which would have made a lame "plot twist reveal" of who the mole was  )

The item(s) in the suitcase never bothered me. I always wondered who keyed Vincent's car. I bet it was Butch. After their slight altercation in the bar, Butch left, and probably keyed his car. Not many people were at the bar, so he would have almost been obvious which one was Vincent's.

That's my theory anyway.
