I'm sure DeNiro would've been wonderful as Santino...but James Caan had just enough gruffness to have been the better casting choice.

Overall I think Coppola made the best decision since DeNiro eventually played young Vito in a way that we can envision no other actor carrying off. Had DeNiro gotten the part of Sonny, this never would've been possible.

I seen his outtakes too De Nero could have played the role even though i think james caan was better suited for the part i'm glad he didn't play sonny because then they could not have used him to play vito in the flashback scenes for part 2 that's what i think.

it would have been good to see de niro has sonny, but try imagining gf2 without de niro has young vito.

DeNiro's screen test as Sonny was terrific. But he was still in his persona as Johnny Boy from "Mean Streets." Caan defined the Sonny role, and then we got DeNiro as young Vito. BTW: FFC also considered DeNiro for the role of Paulie Gatto. Lucky thing he didn't get it.

Ive heard FFC say that De Niro was a mind-blowing Sonny. But he played Sonny as a killer, which is something he could never sell.
