I remember back in high school a bunch of science kids tested the boys' bathrooms, the girls' bathrooms and the shared music instruments (trumpets, trombones, etc.)

These were high school kids messing around with science, but the results were interesting.

The boys' bathrooms were actually the cleanest. (Something to do with the urinals and all the ammonia) And the shared instruments had more bacteria than a girls' toilet.

Eh, high school...

I've always figured those ass-gasket things were completely useless. It seems like everyone I know has to use them though, or when they're not availible, build a nest out of toilet paper.

There's co-worker at my previous job who uses them all the time. To each his own, but I always considered it a silly precaution, especailly in an office building. What I consider even more gross than the seat itself is when people use that paper and then just leave it there for the next person to remove. Yecch!

My sister claims to (whenever she can avoid it) REFUSE to use public toilets of any kind. Thinks is 'disgusting' to sit where 'god knows who' has sat before her. Since she works close to home, waits for her lunch hour to answer nature's call.

A little anal, if you ask me (no pun intended).

after a couple of years, i am back! and what a first topic to post my reply to. hahaha.

Apple, it's bad for the health that your sister waits it out until she gets home -- she will develop a tract infection.

i'm relatively new in the country (nine months), and i don't use those toilet seats. what do i do? i squat it out. as in, i squat and not let my butt touch the seat. it hurts my thighs, after, but at least, i don't get to use those disposable stuff.

Interesting topic!

When given the chance, I always use covers. It's more of a mental thing, a sense of comfort. Toilet seat covers are like airport security. They don't really prevent anything but we continue to use them because they give us a false sense of security.

I think that the benefits are more of the mental variety than the physical.

Men have it easier of course, not having to sit all the time, but when I, ah, do the "other thing" the only public place that I'm not skeeved out - that I find to be consistently clean - are the bathrooms in casinos, where there almost always seems to be a guy cleaning.

I see nothing wrong or strange with an unwillingness to have part of your body come in contact with surfaces where other people have sat recently to, um, dispose of their body wastes.

Of course, there's always the alternative...

I also try to time my "business" with a chapter of a book or section in the newspaper. There is nothing worse than completing the duty before you are done reading a section (Kind of like just getting into a magazine article at the doctor or dentist office only to be disturbed by the receptionist coming out and announcing your next). So, even if I dont have the timing down (which is very seldom anymore) I will still sit and finish reading the section even if I am finished with the "duty"

OK TMI I know but hell -- look at the title of this article -- can anything less be expected????
Hey man, I do the exact same thing.

I can tell you one thing for sure. The Women's bathroom is always in worst shape then the Men's bathroom. Night after night the ladies trash their bathroom at the funeral home.

This crap of squating over a toilet is sick. Sure spray or drip all over the seat. So the next person has to clean it or mistakely sits on it after a person has spray all over the seat.
The least thing people could do is lift the seat if you want to do this.
Have respect for the next lady.

And for crying out loud. If you miss the waste paper can with your hand towels, pick it up. Women miss and leave it on the floor. You don't nearly get the same mess in the mens room.

I wasn't aware a toilet seat protected me, but I was wrong. I mean, what would I do if I fell in? My life would be shattered.

If anything the toilet seat is protecting itself from my level five bio-hazard.

I'm rather fastidious over toilet-related stuff. I use public toilets only if I'm totally desperate and thanks God this is a very very very rare event. I use the toilet in my office because it would not be possible to do otherwise being at office about 10 hrs a day, but you bet I don't seat (buttocks-seat contact) nor do I put covers on the seat. I just avoid any contact and do what I need to do as fast as I can. It's all in the thigh muscles, I guess!

I dunno if they're safe or not, but I do know that Chicago-O'Hare Airport has the coolest toilets in the world. They have little laser censors that control the toilet seat covers. You run your hand over the censor, and the toilet seat cover automatically changes itself. I almost missed my flight because I spend a half an hour in the bathroom playing with the toilet!

I seen those type of covers somewhere in VA. I think it might've been a Super Walmart. I thought it was pretty cool. Has anybody on here ever had to use a outhouse? Or those portable toilets? I would rather pee& crap all over myself before I would use a portable toilet.

Funny, the same thing happened to me at O'Hare airport. But I had already missed the last flight to dallas and had to wait till next morning in hotel Hilton. Cool toilet though!
