I am disgusted by the way that Saddam Hussien is being allowed to basically take over and run his trial. He is being coddled and pampered. Now he's on a hunger strike. How many judges have quit already? Next thing you know they'll just let him out of jail and he'll be back in power over there. And the whole thing will start all over again.

I haven't been following the trial (if you want to call it that  ) regularly, but I do know what you mean. There doesn't seem to be any guidelines.

Yesterday he appeared in his robe and as usual was very defiant. It seems anything goes. I hear that there have been about 26 witnesses testifying against him, but none of them gave any real info enough to convict him. Anyone know any details???

The whole thing is becoming joke. I don't understand the legal system (or lack of it)in Iraq. I am not very hopeful of the end results at this point.

TIS I disagree (suprised? ) . The reason he came in his bath robe was because either he thought that by not getting dressed up for court he wouldn't have to come in or he wasn't planning on going in (I forget what I heard). The Judge sighted a law in Iraq saying they could force the defendants to trial to make sure they here all of the charges against him, that is why he showed up the way he did.

Obviously we have different views and those views are swaying our views of the trial but I just felt that by enforcing the law that it's a start.

I wasn't aware of the reasons he came in a robe, and I do hope you're right and things may not be as unorganized and chaotic as they seem. It would be a absolutely awful if after all this he got off.

Btw, a somewhat amusing quote from Sadam during yesterday's proceedings. I tried to copy/paste the link, but for some reason it didn't work:

"When Abdel-Rahman banged his gavel and rebuked him for not standing when he addressed the court, Saddam retorted: “Hit your own head with that gavel.”

There's an expression in Yiddish (which is a wonderfully expressive but, unforunately dying, language) that transliterates to something like this (I think):

"Fah-drayden deine cup, ess maina ess myna"

Which translates to something like (I think):

"Go bang your own head against the wall and pretend that your banging mine."

I think he's doing all this purposely simply for the sake of putting off his almost certain execution for as long as possible. He may even be under the impression that if he drags it long enough, he'll eventually be saved and his government restored.

Fine with me...especially since there little we here in the U.S. can do about it. Let him play the fool for all the world to see, let him string the courts he formerly ruled for as long as they'll let him do it.

Saadam's day will come. And all these little games will have been for naught.

The whole trial is a joke, IMO.

I still think he should be tried in the International Den Haag court in Holland.

I also find it funny that they are forcing feeding tubes to the Guantanamo detainees on a hunger strike.

It's not like we don't have overcrowded prisons, why bother keeping them around? :p

First, take care of Slobodan Milosevic. Then finish the Saddam trial.

Why are people starting these trials in the first place? Its such bull.
The invasion of Iraq compromised Iraqi national sovereignty in clear violation of international law. Why doesn't anyone care?

My point is this- If people care enough about the law to put him on trial, then why not do something about the law-violating war?

Sadam is on a hunger strike? What the hell do you call what he did while hiding in a hole for several months? It sure as hell wasn't feasting on the fatta' the land.

"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

Because the victors get to write the story.

What are the losers supposed to do?
