AMC is showing "Godfather 3" this month and it is outfitted with an all new opening flashback sequence that is amazing and finally gives the film the "connection" it needed with the other films. Something always bothered me about the original opening and now I know what it is. When it starts, Michael is mainly talking about the kids, but the kids are not the main thrust of the story as we find out by the flashback ending. It's about him & Kay and how he lost her because of the life he chose and this new opening finally clears that up. It includes some never before scenes of Mike on the compound thinking in various poses and the flashback footage is edited brilliantly. It also ties up a loose end in that it gives you a feeling of where all the time has gone as it cuts back & forth to him thinking. Lucas keeps remaking his classics with CGI, but Coppola continues to revise his masterpieces through the medium of television and it's great! The new opening is over fifteen minutes in length! I would assume he & his company had to edit this footage due to the new footage with Michael. Check it out and see the vast improvement on a classic!

Do you know when it will be on again?

They haven't said. But i'm sure they're gonna play the hell out of it since it's already been on twice this week. If I hear something, I'll let you know.

I wish ONE of the movie channels would, once or twice a year, show all three in sequence. Why not? They all still draw decent ratings when they are on - why not just block out nine hours one night and run 'em??

Of course, that's what we all have DVD's for. lol lol

You know what's funny? The basic cable movie channels have all went on some kind of "Rocky Movie Marathon" spree and have been showing the Rocky films back to back or one a week all summer.
"The Godfather" should at least once get that treatment. But you're right, I guess that's what the DVD's are for. But a movie on TV now is nothing more than a promotion for a DVD.

For those of you interested, AMC is showing Godfather Part III once again on Tuesday Night at * p.m. eastern standard time. The new introduction is neat and I like it with the new poses of Michael Corleone. I still though like the establishing shots of the Tahoe compound. i felt like it was a serial cartoon, which I liked as they quickly review key highlights of Godfather Part II that leads into Part III. Michael losing Kay and other plot factors that helps the audience remember.

I've been seeing these commercials on AMC. Does anyone know the background music playing in the commerical? Is it Beethovan or Mozart or what?

I didn't like it because people who have never seen it will think that's really how the movie begins.

I liked the original opening better than the AMC opening. The original had integrity: that spooky view of the ruined boathouse (and spiderweb windows) with Michael's conciliatory letter, set the stage for the movie's theme: Michael's quest for legitimacy. But while I never tire of seeing scenes from the three films, the AMC opening kluge hits us over the head with the obvious: All of Michael's hypocrisies paraded before us. We get so absorbed in those snippets that we don't see the theme of GFIII.

I agree with Turnbull, the "original" opening is so creepy with the flooded, empty boathouse, a perfect introduction for where Michael's life had taken him - but I really enjoyed the new opening that I saw on cable yesterday. It was nice to see snippets from the other parts because, well, it's one of my favorite movies and I never tire of seeing them. One thing that struck me though was the repeated "thought" of Fredo. The scene when they are in Cuba at the hotel then again at the club - Fredo's voice kept repeating...as an older Michael, I wonder if in retrospect he felt he could have done something different with Fredo instead of killing him?

I missed the beginning because I was given the wrong time for it to start mad Damn internet
In any event I think that is the reason Fredo was shown fishing in the beginning of the regular version and why he was talked about throughout the film.Michael was so wrapped up in the business in Part 2 that he did lose his family.By Part 3,he comes to the realization that family is everything, and if the decision would have been made then,he would not have killed Fredo.

The reason that no channel has yet to air the godfather movies back-to-back is because USA network owned exclusive rights to Godfather III (which surprisingly brings in huge ratings). As of last month, AMC bought those rights.

This post is for Irishman. THe background music for the godfather3 commercial on AMC is written by Beethoven and the song is called Adagio Sostenuto.
