I saw a preview for this at the movies a couple months ago and haven't seen another one for it since. Did this movie ever make it to Australian cinemas? Does anybody know? I can't find it any mention of it on any of the cinema websites.
I think it's called Last Days, it's that movie about the musician whose life is similiar to that of Kurt Cobain's.

Review

As I said in the other thread I think it's the best of this year so far, although it got a less than good response, and mixed professional reviews. It's the final film of the Death Trilogy: Gerry, Elephant, Last Days.

To me, it's probably the best film of the year too. Close compeition comes from Broken Flowers, A History of Violence, Wolf Creek, Dear Wendy, Dark Horse andr A Cock and Bull Story. It's certainly the one whose tone, mood, feel, visuals and music linger in my mind the most. It's a haunting film, and a must-see for any true fan of Cinema.

LAST DAYS - ****/5

The best of Van Sant's supposed trilogy of minimalistic films about "Death".

With that said, I reserve judgement about the loose trilogy, as I've not seen the other two. But I think both Gerry and Elephant, alogn with Cronenberg's Spider, may well just be the best films around that I haven't seen yet.

Elephant is close to Last Days. A very shocking and disturbing film. I also consider that 2003's best. I have a feeling you will like it even more, Capo.

Liz, if you want you can view the trailer from apple's site below, and the main website below that.

Here's an interesting piece of trivia from imdb.com about this movie:

"14-year-old, Holger Thaarup, of Denmark was originally cast as the lead, Blake. He didn't speak any English and Gus Van Sant intended the role to be silent; Van Sant then met 17-year-old Michael Pitt and cast him instead."

Strange.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm aching to. Right now Last Days and Le Samourai are 2 movies that I must see within the next month or I will go out of my mind.

This below has to be one of the most gorgeous images I've seen in recent years...

I agree, Capo. One of the reasons I posted three images in my review on this board, as well as disliking the DVD cover used for the film, rather than the original in the link to my review. I also love these two as much as the other.

I just saw this movie. It is very different in acting, dialogue, direction, editing and camera movement. I haven't seen movies like this. So I want to reserve my final opinion on this. But I would say that if those terrific songs (and more importantly those scenes where Blake plays music) were deleted from the movie, it would have been a pretty dull movie. It is slow paced and does not say much about the character. We can feel the character just at this stage of his life, nothing before. But one thing that specifically needs to be praised is that it is not manipulative. This point is mentioned by the cinematographer(in dvd speical features) who points out that the usual techniques of using happy music during happy scenes and sad music during sad scenes and editing in a particular way to force the audience to feel in a certain way are totally done away with in this movie.
