Congrats on the new job and best of luck to you. It seems like you're always doing very fulfilling work.

If you don't mind, can I ask about your background, both educational and professional? I have friends looking to get into nonprofit after business school and I'd like to steer them in the right direction.

Thanks.

My father has diabetes so I would like to personally thank you and wish you the best of luck Partagas. Does the ADA ever work with the CDA?

That's great, Part!

Hey, if you needed some big cash, you should've gotten on Wheel of Fortune -- it's airing from your city this week. George Brett made a guest appearance on there today. (And no, I don't watch the show, but it was on at my parents' house today :p )

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

Part...congratulations, good luck, and good skill!

A quick inventory shows no fewer than seven friends or family members with some form of diabetes. Life hasn't gotten any easier for them, and it will only continue to become more complicated over time. Any help making their lives more comfortable while advancing the research will be greatly appreciated.

That's real good Partagas and I wish you all success in your new job. A lot more education has to be given to prevent the future time bombs that we face. The UK usually catches up with the US on many issues. We've caught you up with the suing and compensation culture and we're not too far behind with a future obesity crisis which is linked to diabetes.

Congratulations! You are right, diabetes is such a big concern right now. I am glad they found an energetic person for the job.

Congratulations, Partagas!

A lot of people do have diabetes without knowing. Isn't that a bit scary? I read that almost 200 million people have diabetes today, and that the number will be doubled within year 2025.

Good luck with your new job!

Thanks for the info Part. I'm fond of medical information.

We've not had anyone with diabetes in our family so the chance of being prone to this disease genetically is really low. However my older brother who is over 40 years old was diagnosed with pre-diabetes a year ago. He LOVES eating anything sweet and he'd eat a lot of it. His work also was so stressful as he had to finish designing a significantly huge petrochemical refinery unit. He had not much of exercise either. This went on until the time he couldn't bear the pain in his wrist and shoulder. His doctor had him to do a full check up and blood test and there he found that his blood sugar was relevantly high.
Fortunately with doing some exercise, eating less sweet things and lowering his stress a little he took both FPG and OGTT and things had went back to normal.

Long story short, as Partagas mentioned; lack of exercise, stressful life and your eating habits as you get older can cause diabetes so watch out and do a regular check up and blood test.

I am surprised the incidence of gestational diabetes is that low. Seems like half the women I know got gestational diabetes. (Not me! )

I have a friend that is about 80 pounds overweight (perhaps more). The doctor said if she didn't loose the weight she will become diabetic.

Hey Part, Do you have any statistics of the disease passed down by heredity? My great grand-father and my grand-father had diabetes, but my father doesn't. Any idea how likely (probability numbers) I am to have diabetes in the future? Right now I don't but usually it shows up quite late, right? Don't refer me to some fat book on this, I am too lazy to research through a few hundered pages to find out :p

Part,
Answers to your ?'s

I assume your mother-in-law has Type 2 Diabetes?
How long ago was she diagnosed?
Not sure
How old is she?
64
Is she active? How much exercise does she do on a regualr basis?
None
ANy disease complications yet? -- vision, neuropothy? kidneys? cardio, etc...
She does not heal good like when she gets a bruise. She's been having alot of leg pains
What does she take -- an oral agent, insulin? etc...
She's on meds for it don't know which one.
Who is her medical support group? solely a family practicioner, or does she also vist with an endocrinologist, CDE, dietician, foot doctor, etc....
I think she just see's her family doctor.
Her problem is she has late dinners, no exercise, She has heart problems, she is depending on meds to help her out instead of changing the way she eats or her life style.
