Just wondering, since there are so many Godfather nuts in here, if some of you would share your opinions on the consistent presence of oranges in all of these films (espeically prior to or occuring simultaneously with scenes in which one or more characters get "wacked"). orange orange orange

I am one who beleves in the "Orange Myth" because of all the coincidences. Some of which are Fredo (in GF I died in GF II) Tessio, Woltz, Micheal,Vito, and Pantangelii.

Buon Giorgno Don Tomasino all the way from Milano. I'm going to Rome and Sorrento in July. I'll wave to you. Check out the many posts and threads on the Orange theories. Use the search. I think you could read for an hour. If you come up with something new, let us know. There are the Orange-bad-omen believers and doubters (mostly believers, but I think they are nuts). smile

I believe in oranges too, but I think they symbolize power rather than foreshadowing death/violence. But I have yet to meet anyone who shares my opinion. *shrug*

Why, did they make your fortune? And did you raise your daughter in the oranges fashion?

Re Orange Theory

Was recently informed that allegedly Cosa Nostra settled originally in Southern States of America. They made their legitimate living by selling oranges. They clashed with local officials. This was apparently called 'The War of The Oranges' Could there be a connection? Could the producers of the movies have done their historical homework?

Jeanie,
Hi, welcome. Thank you for introducing a new twist on the orange theory. Personally I think they were still worried about scurvy and wanted to get enough Vitamin C. wink

Hello I'm new here so I don't know if anyone has noticed this or not but I have been watching this movie like once a week (at least) for the past 3 years and have never picked this up until now..

At the end of Godfather III, after there is a flashback to the loves of Mike, there is a dissolve to a much older Michael who puts on his sunglasses, then puts his hands in his lap. If you watch the next long shot carefully, you see that his right hand sits in his lap, holding an orange. His left hand falls, then his right hand falls releasing the orange to the ground, then Mike finally falls.

Pretty cool Huh!

Welcome to the board daniela

yeah, the orange is very well recognized in michael's hand when he dies.

http://www.jgeoff.com/godfather.html

As a matter of fact, both Vito and Michael are the only ones to die WITH an orange in their hand (or mouth from Vito's POV)

....no I think he was from Orange County, California.

I think it would have been silly for Michael to be holding a watermelon when he died. And Vito couldn't very well put a piece of canteloupe in his mouth.

Maybe oranges are an Italian thing... I was watching Rocky last night and I noticed that someone throws Rocky an orange when he's running through Philadelphia. Coincidence?

I noticed the oranges in many scenes of the first two films, but never noticed (until last week's airing on Spike TV) the oranges on the table during Woltz & Hagen's dinner.

I don't believe in the Orange myth because you see them everywhere-not only at certain points but oranges are everywhere in the films. I think it was just a ay of keeping Sicly with the family.

Correct me if I am wrong but aren't oranges grown in Sicily and as such would be more cultural than anything else. Furthermore maybe oranges represent something a bit more exotic than a standard apple or peach.

Anyone ever try the Michael method of eating an orange with the skin still on? I did, and it wasn't fun. frown

^^^^I'm pretty sure the skin was gone from where he was actually eating from.
Anyhoo, the oranges sort of took on a life of thier own. They were put places to give some color to the dark cinomatography, and they happened to be mostly in scenes w/ characters who were killed. So in Part 2, the flimmakers dilibrately put them in scenes w/ characters who would die. I base that on the fact that Fredo sits next to an orange basket but does not die in the movie, and FFC doesnt make Part 1 with Part 2 in mind.
