Why do men buy fully comprehensive car insurance and then not use it??? Or is it just my guy

Year after year he pays out a couple of hundred pounds for vehicle insurance so no matter what happens he's covered. Then when something DOES happen he DOESNT claim..says he'll lose too much Go figure!!!
The point is you pay more at the beginning for the extra cover so if in the event you dont use or need the extra cover surely it's a waste of cash and you should just buy third party fire and theft for a small amount at the beginning??

What brought this on was he pranged the bumper of the car today at work (nothing else involved  ) but he's messed it up it'll cost a lot to replace (he drives a suzuki grand vitara) and he thinks I'll give him the cash....I told him to claim off the insurance :p and he wont....hence my gripe...what would you do??

I'd claim the insurance as that is the point of it. you wont get a no claims bonus that year but atleast you have your car in full working order.

If I'm paying for something and there's a legitimate claim to recover against that I'd definitely file for that payment.

In the meantime, start training your grandson the right way.

I wouldn't claim for a tiny prang. You lose your no claims and then your premium is going to go up. In the long term it's more damaging. I see the problem though. Why go fully comp if you're not going to claim? Well I'd only ever go fully comp if it's a decent car and I'd only ever claim if the damage is going to be substancial to my wallet.

Anyway, what do I know? I've never owned my own car because simply I can't afford the insurance anyway.

I agree, you've to see which one is more damaging in the log run and claiming for a small dent is usually not a good idea. But I'm not really sure about your case.
