Although as far as glitter/excitement and nightlife go, you can't beat Vegas, I loved walking around Times Square. I agree with all of the above; Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, etc. All definitely a must. I never did so much walking. So many shops, such a great selection of restaurants, every other corner they're selling pictures or food or gifts; all kinds of interesting stuff, and of course it can be entertaining in itself just watching the people go by. Too, I never heard such a variety of different languages as I passed people on the street. NYC is truly one of the coolest placest I've ever been. Have a great time and make sure to look for the Naked Cowboy. TIS

Well sure, you could go to the usual tourist places, but my door is always open But seriousely, I would definetly check out the major tourist attractions: Ground Zero, Grand Central Station, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Times Square. If you are gonna go to either Statue of Liberty, or Ellis Island, then you should probably see them both in one day. They are just a ferry ride apart. You should also definetly hit up Broadway and see a play.

So, you're a Scottish gal looking for the best in New York, huh? I've been known to be just the opposite .... a New York guy looking for the best Scotch in New York Assuming this is your first trip to the Big Apple you probably will do good to see "the" touristy sights (some mentioned above like The Statue of Liberty, a Broadway play, the top of The Empire State Building, etc.). Consider going downtown to see Wall Street (tour the Stock Exchange) and a short walk west to Ground Zero. Eat in Chinatown at 3 a.m., walk through Times Square at 10 p.m. (the theater crowds getting out) and check all the vendors selling their wares on the street (you'll see plenty of "Godfather" stuff). Walk through The Hotel Edison and follow in Luca Brasi's last footsteps. Go up to East 71st Street and see where your countryman, Sean Connery, is in legal battle with his downstairs neighbor. Check out Central Park, the ritzy stores on 5th Avenue, St. Parick's Cathedral, the United Nations and Madison Square Garden. There are TONS of museums covering all types of interests (art, natural history, television, astronomy, etc.). You'll be able to eat a different type of cuisine for every meal while you're here. Take advantage of the city's diversity. Ride the subway, take a cab ride, go on a three hour boat ride around Manhattan Island. Do you know where you'll be staying?

Well, I guess he must be in a good shape if people tip him! In Rome there used to be a kind of dancer in the Tritone square. Wearing the strangest hats of the world, following a inner music, he just moved in some weird way, very slowly, a sort of a human sloth.... A real nut! But he was not cool at all and I'd never dreamt to tip him! :p

Aside from all of the things that were already recommended, you may also want to do some things outside of Manhattan. The Bronx Zoo and Botanical Gardens are great, and a very short ride to Arthur Avenue, which IMHO is far superior to Little Italy. Last time we were in Manhattan, we took the NBC tour, which was fun. They show you the sets of various shows. There are workers from the TV station who try to get you to be in the studio audience for different talk shows, etc., even offering to feed you lunch if you'll stay. I love walking along 5th Avenue, going to St. Patricks, buying knock-offs from the street vendors, wandering around Tiffany's. If you see a show, try to eat at Becco's in the theater district. The food's excellent. It's owned by Lidia, the TV chef Becco website and the food's very good. They also have one of the most reasonable wine lists in the city. If you go to Chinatown, try a place called Wo Hop. The food's good and very, very inexpensive. It's located at 17 Mott Street and actually has two reataurants. One is at street level and is more of a take-out place, although they do have tables. The other entrance is next door and you have to enter through those "tornado doors", but try to eat in the basement if you can. The ambiance is a bit nicer, although the wait can be long.

We all have different views on whats fun to do. Going to Night Court, watching the proceedings and then pigging out on cheap Chinese food a few blocks away in Chinatown late at night/very early morning is a fun, cheap NYC experience. The three hour boat ride around the Island is a delightfully cool (literally) way to see the sights on a hot summer day.

I hope you have a great time, Debz. It really is a great place to spend a few days, or even live.

The Waldorf if one of my favorite hotels. I love it. One thing I forgot to mention is The Rainbow Grill, at the top of Rockefeller Center. There is also The Rainbow Room, but I don't think it's open to the general public any more; it's more of a catering hall. The Rainbow Grill is the bar side and has a small menu. The drinks are horrendously expensive, but the view is worth the price you'll pay. It is absolutely amazing. If you do want to eat in Little Italy, I recommend Anthonys SPQR or Il Fornaio. They are very near each other. If you can't tell, my husband and I love to eat
