I watched the Trailers fro the 3 GFs before. GF III's trailer is standard hollywood fair. GF II is good. But GF I is basically 3-4 minutes of just linear narration, telling everything except a few key plot details.

My question: What's the deal with the trailer for GF I? and was there somekind of renaissance in trailer making between 1972 and 1974 that caused these two trailers to turn out so different?

The trailer for GFI is almost all still shots while the trailer for 2 isnt. However, both go over the whole plot whne you think about it. I dont kno why one is mostly still shots and the other isnt but I think it is interesting that the only moving shot of GFI trailer is when you see Vito playing with little Anthony. I think Coppola does this because it makes this shot seem more important than the others since it is the first to move. It seems like he wanted to preview to everyone that Vito always cared about family the most.

Yes, that is on the DVD. I didn't think it was lame, I thought it was neat.

Yup, I saw them on the bonus DVD and recently I saw a link to them on www.IMDB.com, when I looked up the titles. I agree that a deficiency in most Trailers is they do go over the plot in some length, especially the longer they are. Trailers however tend to mix up the material and create a hype for the movie.

The GF I trailer is stills, which I think is cool, but it is linear and practically tells the whole fricken movie! THE WHOLE MOVIE!! I just don't understand that and the fact that the GF II trailer is such a different trailer, more conventional.

It was probably more linear due to the fact most people would have known the plot having read the highly succesful novel.

My primary complaint of the GFI trailer on the DVD is that it gives too much of the story away. It left no surprises for the viewer to discover in the movie, which is what a good trailer would do. I agree with the other posts - the GFII & III trailers were done much better.

I didn't find anything lame about the trailor, it was different. It would be cool to see other trailors like that. The only thing is, it pretty much gives away the story line, and it would pretty much ruin my watching experience, if i saw the trailor prior to watching the movie.

yeah the trailer was different. I enjoyed all three of them and I didn't find anything wrong with them. Also most people read The Godfather before seeing the film.

Of course, this was 1972, so I mean things were a bit different then with regards to movie trailers... ohwell

I agree that it was kinda a cool trailer, but as the last post says, it was made in 1972. But the Godfather part 2 trailer was made in 1974... so why are both of these trailers so different? Was there a renaissance in trailer making in 1973 or 1974?

(EDITED AFTER A COOLING DOWN PERIOD...)

And by the way, this is a pet peeve for me so I'll indulge myself...

It is called THE GODFATHER, not 'GFI'

There is a 'The Godfather, Part II', and 'The Godfather, Part III' which we all refer to as GFII and GFIII.

Fine.

But there is NO 'The Godfather, Part I'. It's just 'The Godfather'

So why can't it be referred to as simply, 'GF'?

Sorry ApplyOnYa. I guess I have a different approach, I used the simplification GF to refer to trilogy or for the Godfather universe. I guess if it's the board standard then it's mine too.

NO apologies necessary, Underboss...you are not alone in the obstinate use of the ridiculous GFI acronym.

However the fact remains and always will that there is no 'The Godfather - Part I'

Oh so what? So some people refer to it as GFI. Big deal. What difference does it make? It's no reason to be rude and grouchy.

But then again, I'm new here. In the words of Hyman Roth, a "small potato."
