Although I was never a big Pantera fan, I did get to see and meet "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and his new band Damageplan recently in NJ. He and his brother Vinnie Paul are legends in the world of 'Metal', and it sucks when shit like this happens. 5 people are dead because it appears one sick fan is upset over the breakup of a rock band.

You don't need me to say how pathetic that whole thing was... WTF?? At least justice was served that very night.

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

It was a horrible situation and I'm not making a joke about the situation only the news reporters. All over the news you have the 60 year old "clean cut, wealthy" news anchors saying "dimebag lived a good life" lol

It's a weird feeling knowing that I was recently at a small club, very close to the stage watching him play, and that psycho could have been at that show instead of the Ohio show. Despite being legends in their genre of music, these guys were so friendly and down to earth. They hung out in the parking lot after show, and partied with their fans like regular guys. I never saw a band do that before, and I've been to 100's of concerts. I wasn't even at the show to see them play. I was there to see the band "Disturbed", which was touring with them. After seeing how cool Darrell and his brother were, I had new respect for Pantera and Damageplan.

To tell you the truth, I never heard of Damageplan or Dime Bag before this... but of COURSE I knew Pantera! (I'm a sucker for metal and especially thrash -- but don't necessarily "follow" it )

But I'm taking this story as I heard it -- and: see above. Pathetic!

I'm sure, tho, it must've been weird just having seen him/them like that!

It was weird, and I never heard of Damageplan either. My friends and I were there to see "Disturbed". They are one of our favorite bands.
I was fairly familiar with Pantera, but not a big fan. When they came on the stage, I said to my friend: "Damn, these guys look and sound like Pantera." My friend said: "Holy shit, those are the guys from Pantera." Next thing I know, they kicked into a Pantera song, and the whole place went nuts. We were pretty psyched, because we weren't even going to show up for them, thinking they were just an ordinary "opening act", but we got to see a couple of legends, and the they rocked. Sadly, who would've known it would be one of the last times anyone would see them. Actually, it was a couple of months ago. The show was at the "Starland Ballroom" in Sayreville.

I was just listening to Pantera a little while ago, my small way of paying tribute.

They get so many great bands there it seems, of many genres...! I have yet to make it there, tho. Even when my friend's band played there, it was bad timing.

This tragedy hit the rock community hard. Even harder was the guitar community. I happen to be a guitar player myself(22 years now) and I talk to other guitarists all the time. Many were influenced by Dimebag's playing, many were fortunate enough to be able to meet him and have a drink wtih him. From what I have read, he was a very down-to-earth guy.

RIP Dimebag, your fans weep for you.

I came, I saw, I had no idea what was going on, I left.

My father lives in Arlington just a few blocks from the ABBOT HOUSE. I saw Darrel and his brother a number of times on the street or at the market.

While I was never a true fan, you could not help respecting the hometown boy's generosity -- hanging out with fans in their CLUBHOUSE and never refusing anyone's request for a photo or authograph.

My heart goes out to their close friends there -- especially comedian JIM FLORENTINE who not only toured with them but was their biggest fan and friend.

I used to be this huge Pantera fan, my favorite album being Vulgar Display of Power . So yeah, it was a pretty crappy thing that happened.

R.I.P. Dimebag, you will be missed .

damn these are bad news

what makes me really angry are the people who say that this happene because it was a heavy metal concert and that heavy metal leads to violence. this is fault of a no life-idiot and not of the musicians! I mean, I love to listen Ozzy's "Suicide Solution" but I never considered to kill myself. anyway, RIP Dimebag.

Speaking of Ozzy, on MTV they said he was too distraught to even comment on this. He was very close to the Abbotts, and he toured with Pantera
many times.

Seeing how I havwe no idea who "Dimebag" is I havent clicked into this thread for quite a few days. Talked to my brother, a big Pantera fan, today and he told me about it. I hate the music, but no one should have to die like that. RIP

A message from the awesome band "Disturbed". Damageplan had been opening on Disturbed's Mini Tour:

IT IS WITH THE UTMOST DESPAIR THAT WE EXTEND OUR CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYERS TO EVER WALK THE FACE OF THIS EARTH, DIMEBAG DARYLL ABBOT. NOT ONLY WAS HE AN INSPIRATION TO ANYONE WHO EVER PICKED UP A GUITAR, BUT HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST GENUINE, BIG HEARTED INDIVIDUALS YOU WOULD EVER HAVE THE PLEASURE OF MEETING. DIME LOVED TO HAVE A GOOD TIME, AND WAS NEVER SATISFIED UNTIL EVERYONE ELSE AROUND HIM WAS HAVING ONE TOO. WE ARE ALL STILL IN AN UTTER STATE OF SHOCK, REFUSING TO BELIEVE THAT HE IS TRULY GONE. INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON THE INCREDIBLY UGLY DEMISE OF HIS DEATH, LET US REMEMBER THE JOY AND STRENGTH HE BROUGHT TO ALL OF US WHILE HE WAS ALIVE. TO RITA, VINNY PAUL, AND ALL OF THOSE WHO LOVED HIM SO MUCH, WE EXTEND OUR MOST HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES. WE'LL HAVE A DOUBLE BLACK TOOTH IN YOUR HONOR BROTHER. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

ALL OUR LOVE AND RESPECT,

DAVID DRAIMAN
DAN DONEGAN
MIKE WENGREN
JOHN MOYER

My guy Vinny is a huge Pantera fan. I like their music though Megadeth is my first choice in metal. What are the details. Was it in Chicago?

It was in Ohio, and Damageplan were playing on their own. They finished touring with Disturbed a couple of months ago. Disturbed was playing a mini club tour to introduce their new bass player. I think it was only 6 shows, which sold out almost instantly. Disturbed usually play arenas, or very large theaters. Damageplan was with them on the short tour to promote their debut album.
