Warning Contains Spoilers


When detective Devine and his partner bring Brenden Harris in the second time they ask him what he remembers about his father. He mentions the change, the smell of chewing gum and the fact that his father left when he was six.

Later before Jimmy Markum shoots David he tells him about how he shot Just Ray in the head and dumped him in the river when his wife was still carrying Brendan.

Did I hear that wrong or is an error in the script?

The son Brendan didn't know that his father was killed by his girlfriends Dad. Sean Penn's character felt guilty for killing his Dad so he sent checks every month to the family so that they would presume it was from the father. That is why after Sean Penns kills Tim Robbins character the detective asks if he is going to send his family checks every month too.

Sorry if this is confusing, I havent seen the movie in awhile and can't remember all the names. I remember it was an excellent movie though.

I understand that what I am asking about is a timeline question.

Brendan remember a little bit about his father who left when he was six years old.

But Jimmy says that he killed Brendans father before Brendan was born (while his mother was still carrying him)
