I'm interested in learning more about the ancient ceremonies and initiations the Ndragheta holds. What are the best sources and books to read on this? I read this on their wiki "The 'Ndrangheta is the only one of the Italian mafia-type organizations to have maintained its ancient rites, passing them down orally and through secret codes. It is characterized by a horizontal structure made up of autonomous clans known as 'ndrine, based almost exclusively on blood ties"

Cosa nostra mantained its ancient rites too, although less complex than ndrangheta ones

yeah compared to the Camorra and Cosa Nostra, Ndragheta's structure, rites, hiearchy etc. seems much more complex than the other two

why is this?

Don't know how and who started it but the secret codes have been found all around the world Australia, Canada, US, Europe.

The many books of nicola gratteri and antonio nicaso go in great detail about this stuff, but not many are translated in english.

In the 1800s the Bella Società Riformata had rituals much similar than the ndrangheta for this reason Raffaele Cutolo took inspirazione to form the Nuova Camorra Organizatta.

Ndrangheta probably copied the rituals of the old Camorra in 1800s

I agree in 'ndrangheta there is still a rank called camorrista.
