Serious question. I see the Kansas City mob portrayed in movies and shows as this big powerful crime family, but in real life were they ever that great? Were they ever a powerhouse in organized crime once upon a time or is that just a bunch of bullshit?

Discuss.

In my opinion, they were powerful through Chicago. After the straw man case, I think they lost a big chunk of their power and influence. After that, I think it was kind of over for them.

So basically a small time crime family with connections through the Chicago mob. Similiar in power to the Buffalo Crime family in New York or the Pittsburgh mob.

The midwest families owed much of their power to the unions control and the las vegas skimming after losing both of it,the Kansas City family began a slow decline.
The KC mafia was powerful because was organizated and again had connections that the other oc gruops never had until the 1980s.

EXCELLENT response Furio. Excellent!

The KC Family was VERY powerful, but it owed most of that power to their influence over national labor unions and their hidden interest in several Las Vegas casinos. Once they were knocked out of the box with those two they experienced a quick decline.

In this chart are listed only 24 made men alive in 1983,maybe the family a little more big but not more 30/40 made men.

Whats the status on made guys still living in and around Kansas City? How many guys are in a crew out there? We all know there has to be some sort of crew running some stuff in KC even if the family as a whole is defunct.

KC was very big in Vegas. Read about them and others in "The Black Book and the Mob," by Carole Case and Ronald Farrell--the definitive book on OC and Nevada gaming.

The poster "Joey Dice" can pretty much tell all things KC. Nick Civella and Tuffy Deluna were ruthless. There was another faction at war with them up until they got busted for the skim cant remember their names,it was several brothers.I just cant believe that Civella personally met Glick in a hotel room and told him he would poke his eyes out and he would be lucky to leave the room alive placing a gun on the table. What boss does that hell get a soldier insulate yourself man. There are some wiretaps with Spilotro and Civella,Deluna,Lombardo.Shenker on youtube.Pretty awesome Lombardo tells Shenker he wont reach his next birthday if he doesnt pay.

The Kansas City Mafia basically died with Nick Civella, the city has never seen another don like him since he was in charge.

I think Kansas had to have been as big as New York or elsewhere up until the late 1970's. St. Louis also. The main thing they had to have had was working relationships with other groups, which is a thing I wonder about. Not if they did or didn't, but how much others in the Kansas area worked with them.

The Kansas City Outfit was a fairly large membership and when I researched them for an expose ButtonGuys wrote about them it ended up as a 13 page mini-book. I was surprised by that.

By contrast the St. Louis membership under Anthony Giordano was much, much smaller. It was actually one of the smaller families I ever wrote about.

Hard to say exactly, but over a 60-70 year period I logged approximately 125 or so confirmed or suspected made members. So I'd estimate that at any given time period they probably numbered in the range of 50-75 soldiers in the ranks. I logged over 150 criminal associates, and I'm sure they had a lot more than that.

They had a significant presence in the midwest, thats for certain.

Not that long ago I didn’t think there was any LCN, out of NYC, I thought they were all the “MICKEY MOUSE MAFIA”

Now that I have learned more I almost think the opposite.

I think that the right way to run a family is smaller in size look at the success that some of these small families have had.

And just because they chose not to make new members for different reasons doesn’t take away from what they accomplished.

I think Detroit was/is the most successful crime family in the history of America.

If you look at how long their admin have served behind bars.
Amount of wealth they have accumulated.

The amount of members that have broken to code.

The plan from inception was a Secret Society to blend in so your neighbors wouldn’t know.

The street gangs replaced the mafia in all the US. Why are you so surprised? The italian americans get rich and stop to joint the mob not so the blacks.

But if the Mafia was still prevalent they would take top priority over these guys, you know it, I know it.
