How common is it for mob families to recruit gangs to do their dirty work such as killings and extortion in today's era of organized crime?

I would imagine its easier for mob bosses in today's climate to get gangs to do this type of stuff for them and give them a cut of $$$ for agreeing to do it than to have one of their own soldiers have to do it and risk going to prison. I imagine that in every major city you have a mob family that has a business relationship with a major gang when it comes to certain matters that need to be taken care of.

Thoughts?

Hasn't been a confirmed sanctioned hit in New York in almost 10 years so it's a little hard to judge but it definitely seems far more common now than in the past. John Pennisi testified that Joe Perna recruited members of the Bloods as part of a conspiracy to commit an assault though it never panned out. He also believed when he fell out of favour someone sent gang members to lay on him. There was a Genovese family murder conspiracy that involved hiring members of the Crips. DeCavalcante captain Charles Stango wanted to subcontract the proposed hit on Luigi Oliveri to some bikers.

It seems to have become very common in Montreal for hits to be subcontracted to street gangs.

Very common for a variety of crimes in Montreal.
There is a long history of different mafia factions working with different street gangs.
Murders, arson, extortion and of course drug trafficking.

The few instances involve very low level associates or relatives trying to get outsiders to do a killing, but since they are outsiders themselves it is not really the mob hiring gangs from outside their organization. I have a question, who here believes that Albet Anastasia was really hiring Murder Incorporated guys like Reles to kill people? Anastasia had so many of his own men to use I can't see him asking for outisde help and then actually paying large sums (By the economic standards of those times) to get it done.
