Why is there no criminal group from Sardinia?

We all know that Sicily and the southern part of Italy got some of the most known criminal groups of the world. The mafia from Sicily is probably the most well known.
But I was wondering, why the island of Sardinia never create an organized crime group like the two other islands, Sicily and Corsica (even if its a french island)

Sicily and Corsica made many famous gangsters and organizations, but what about Sardinia ?

The closest thing to some sort of indigenous Sardinian OC was perhaps the “Anonima Sarda” or “Anonima Sequestri”, a very loosely organized network of former farmers specialized in high-profile kidnappings.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonima_sarda

Sardinia was one of Italy’s poorest and least developed region. There weren’t many of them and, on top of that, they had massive immigration towards Northern Europe and overseas (Argentina, Canada). Whatever form of crime they had was basically rural mischief, like cattle rustling. They had/have some sort of honor system that made vendettas last for generations. It’s a fascinating sociological reality similar to what exists in the Balkans.

In the 1970s mainland investors and OC groups turned it into a major tourist hub. Since then the whole region is mostly focused on hospitality, real estate and tourism-based services. That makes it a perfect money laundering spot.

Whatever OC presence they have now is from criminal groups from mainland Italy.

There are certain alliances between the local underworld and the 'ndrangheta and campania mostly drug trafficking, in the 90s there were some sardinian crime figures active in Germany and Benelux.

There is. In fact the Sardinese are "compare" and closely affiliated with the Sicilians. And similar to Corsica, they ally with both the Sicilian Mafia and the French underworld in Marseilles. Although the Corsican Mafia is more closely tied to the French, and Sardinia to Sicily.

Sardina was always poor and the kidnapping was the olnly serious crime committed by the Sardinians. The fact that have few popolation and that the money are only in Costa Smeralda wasnt the basis to create a large oc gruops.

I agree. And the fact that they are more secluded and regional.

Graziano Mesina born 4 April 1942),
also popularly known as Gratzianeddu in Sardinian language, is an Italian bandit of the Anonima sarda. He has escaped the authorities at least 10 times. He was called the "king of the kidnappers" by The New York Times in 1992.There have been books, songs, and at least one film about him.

*** it is not correct to talk of a Sardinian criminal syndicate, since the Sardinian bandits responsible for the kidnappings lacked any kind of command structure, did not influence the political sphere, and several groups of bandits would operate with little to no relationship with each other.

Attilio Cubeddu
born 2 March 1947) is a criminal from Sardinia who was a member of Anonima sarda, a term used for bandits engaged in various kinds of crime in the island, in particular kidnapping, from the 1960s onward. Since 1997, he is on the "List of most wanted fugitives in Italy" of the ministry of the Interior, since he left the prison of Badu 'e Carros in Nuoro, where he was detained for murder, serious injury and kidnapping. In 1998 investigations were extended internationally for his extradition.

The times of Anonima Sarda have passed. Now in Costa Smeralda where there are rich tourists for sure there are drug dealing and other crimes but not an organized gruop behind it.
Also Graziano Mesina was sentenced for drug traffick.

Fun Fact.
The only sardian made in a US family was Rocco "Roy" Spada Spada (1905-1981) in the Detroit family.

There is a significant difference between an old, structured, indigenous and pervasive criminal subculture and just regular criminals that only share a place of origin and residence.

In Sardinia you have the latter.

As I posted earlier, the anomima sarda was the closest thing Sardinia ever had to something resembling a criminal “underworld”…and it wasn’t even organized.

Anything above petty criminality is run by mainland mobsters who might occasionally use local muscle.
