The Waterfront commissions go too far and have too much power. They can kick a person out of a job just for knowing a mobster, or being related to one. Even if the worker did nothing wrong, they are out of a job. They also kicked out a lot of non-mafia tied people for frivolous things, such as a woman who they had fired because she had a shoplifting arrest 10 years earlier.
Their excuse was that she did not reveal it when interviewed. However in many cities if you are arrested for minor shoplifting it is expunged form your record if you are not arrested again, and you are allowed to say you have no arrest record. They kicked out a few people with slight mob ties, a grew with close ties. Yet all the others thrown out for old theft charges, or not revealing an old drug arrest, what do those people do? They did nothing wrong on the waterfront, and now are out of work. No trail, just a group of politically appointed flunkies making moves to show they have some value.

The mob cannot take back the waterfront, it is not 1940 anymore. The Post is anti-Hochul (So am I) but that is an example of fake news.

Take a look at Anna Sergi’s research on the current mob presence in the ports of NJ/NY and Montreal.

It seems that only two families still have some kind of influence on the waterfront.

But the FBI bureaus in both states, the federal Labor Department and the US attorney for the Southern District of New York all say that the commission’s work has been vital in investigations and prosecutions that combat the Genovese and Gambino organized crime families’ continued influence over the ILA and waterfront businesses.

I remember an old timer cop telling me a story how he went on his own time time to watch a bust go down on the waterfront... He said he was 2 blocks away watching with binoculars...He said the next day the chief called him in asking what he was doing there....

Seems the FBI was much sharper back in the day then they are today

The mob might not “take over” the ports and rule them like it used to, but it sure could use less scrutiny to increase the level of influence it still has.

Mafiosphere | The invisible 'Ndrangheta of the port of New York
Politics, trade unions and editors in the Big Apple. In the most important infrastructure of the east coast of the USA, not only container trafficking together with the five families that control the American Cosa Nostra. And some would like to reduce the Waterfront Commission's crime controls

But Luan she is just repeating what she is told by the government, they want to put political appointees into jobs that come with high salaries to oversee the waterfront.

You can give her some credit - research is not just repeating what one is told - there is a lot more going into it. But indeed control is not a word anyone should use of a port, that doesn't mean that there is no influence....

I feel you Jace. I’m also skeptical when it comes to “reports” and all.
Yet, she didn’t come off as a radical, like saying that there’s is NO mob influence at all or saying that the mob RUNS the ports like in the 60s. It’s pretty balanced and logical. And I tend to believe that the truth usually stands in the middle.

There’s no doubt that the mob has some presence on the NJ/NY waterfronts. Nothing that resembles the old days, of course, but it’s there.

Montreal, on the other hand, it’s a whole different story. It’s a jungle up there.

Every major container port is an entry for illegal stuff.

The Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor, on December 7, formally banned multiple individuals from obtaining "gainful" employment on the docks over alleged ties to Mafia figures.

As per published reports, the rejects had ties to the Lucchese, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese, and DeCavalcante crime families.
The Commission also blocked an applicant who did not disclose his association with a “member of the Sicilian faction of the Gambino family.

Their contracts were things like having a grandfather who was an associate, or an in law who was a member years ago. The men themselves had no criminal involvement, why do you leave that out?

As I said earlier, they threw out people for things like old shoplifting arrests (Two Black women who were secrataries at the waterfront) and they did throw out a few guys (Non-Italian, non OC) who had old serious offenses. Think: If people with records are banned from jobs, is the reason to push them back to crime?

The Waterfront Commission is a political tool to give friends jobs where they do nothing useful (How ironic) by snooping deep into workers pasts to find anything to get them fired.
