I just was told that former ILA Union leader Anthony Scotto has passed at the age of 87 years old.

He had one helluva run, and lived a charmed life.

LE labeled him a soldier (and former capo) in the old Gambino Family. But he was also a top union leader in the U.S. for decades.

Ah Bohome! (don't know if I spelled that correctly. I doubt it. Lol. But it basically means bless the dead).

Tony Scotto was a decent man. A personal friend of mine had told me Tony had contracted Covid. So I'm not sure, but he may have died from complications of that. He was very elderly and weak after all.

My mother went to school with him at PS 29, the Scotto's are big on Court St. in the Gardens and were close with the Anastasias. The Anthony Anastasio ILA Union building was on Court St until up about 2008 when they turned it into luxury condos. His son Michael Scotto was in the hotel unions and my mother ran into him frequently at the Sheraton Midtown on W52nd St.

Yes the Scotto's are nice people. Not gavone. They own (or owned) Scotto's Al Fresco Restaurant in midtown. Rosanna Scotto has had a great career as a primetime news anchor. The other children are all active and productive and successful.

Tony Scotto was a college educated guy. He was no dummy. He became the ILA head through his marriage to Albert Anastasia's niece, Tough Tony Anastasio's daughter Marion.

They pushed him for office, and later Carl Gambino himself further elevated Scotto's career by backing him. Very smart, savvy guy.

He did that one 5-year bid on a labor racketeering conviction and faded into the woodwork after that.

He was a very wealthy guy, very respected. Had his button, so what more did he need?

His brother-in-law was Anthony (Toto) Anastasio, another made guy. Together they did well for themselves and their blood families. Kudos to all of them.

I don't think people realize how important of a man he was. Anthony Scotto gave them tremendous political power. When Jimmy Carter was the president elect in 1976, he named Anthony Scotto as a possible candidate for the position of US secretary of labor. That is just unbelievable lol

But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way
Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away

You are so right Giacalone. He was a powerhouse in his day

He was a close pal of mayors, governors, presidents, etc. And despite his mob reputation that was later exposed by the FBI, he remained close to all of them. He was just way too important both on the labor scene, and the political power that garnered him for politicians to ignore him or chance incurring his wrath.

He had the strength and that made him a kingmaker.

Great point you brought out about Jimmy Carter. I remember that situation.

From what I've heard is that he was truly loved as a human being. Always had a smile and a kind word. He was richer than almost everybody, but he was one of those very few guys who deserved his good fortune.

I've heard the same. I think we can attribute that to his higher education and level headed thinking. He did become extremely wealthy. And powerful. And although he was indeed a goodfella, he was not a violent man or gunsel. Tony was not a push-nose hoodlum. He was, by and large, a cultured guy who happened to get his button.

And it clearly showed by the droves of important people who flocked toward him, as opposed to run from him!

LOL. Thank you Lisa. I gotta say girl, that you're getting better and better at what you do with your investigating skills. So kudos to you.

And let's not forget that I was also told by a friend that Scotto had contracted Covid and was in the hospital in very bad shape. Whether he actually died from complications of Covid or not, I gotta believe that it didn't help Tony any as an elderly man of almost 90 fighting for his life against that deal disease as well.

[But you and I also gotta realize that a blowhard like Louie will never stop with his trash talking of people. Even after you debunk all his lies and twisted comments time and again. He just can't help himself].

Like our friend Colonel Reb said just the other day about him - Louie has to post up a negative nasty comment on nearly every thread he comments on or he's just not happy with himself.

He's a sick 'little' guy. Better to just ignore him.

The more I think about it, Tony Scotto lived a really interesting life. And if you and others agree, I would be willing at some point to write an in-depth biography about his life and career.

PS: that is of course providing that I can gather up enough info about his early life as a kid and young man to really make for a worthwhile story. There's a lot out there already about him. But its mostly about 'after' he rose to power.

I'd love to be able to get enough about his fledgling years to really make a nice storyline

I’m surprised you can’t gather up info of his young life from Scottos”friend” that told you he had covid and died today...I’m sure if you pump him for info he will give a few tidbits like he gave you the covid information and his passing today

Ps. You can pull his younger information off Rosanna Scottos Instagram page. She posted about his death hours before you did ...she works at Fox News
Have at it kid...

Ps if you threaten me w death again and we will see who’s who...and I’m not going to play tough guy fake shit...I’m going to sue the fuck out of you and run you through court until I either take your business and website and you tube channel and ad revenue and google rankings or I run you broke by keeping you in court again and again..made up Cosa Nostra wanna be...talking about crazed. You have a god damn website full of men that you worship that are killers, child traffickers and rapists...

I'll just say he wasn't a decent man. I don't doubt for a second he was loved and treated those around him with decency. But ANYONE that rises to be a capo and a very rich person in the Gambino family has done tremendous harm either physically, mentally or financially to a lot of people. Innocent people as well as other criminals. Make no mistake that he crushed people and businesses either directly or gave the orders. So a decent man? No not a chance. Lets not martyr a criminal just because he was liked and is now dead.

If no one says he ruined or crushed them, but everyone who felt with him liked him and thought he was a gentleman from workers up to business leaders and politicians, there is no substance to your claim.

I'm pretty sure going to jail for a few years for racketeering is the substance for my comment. But hey I'm just a guy posting an opinion

Our fellow poster "Mamaluke" posted this up some weeks ago in regard to another thread. But it was so good, and so on point, that I saved it for future reference and use. And this moment seems like the proper time to say it again.

It goes something like this;

"Just goes to show that there are good and bad people in every walk of life. You can be a good person and be a gangster, those two things are not mutually exclusive in so far as the law is not synonymous with "good"...and crime is not synonymous with "bad." If there can be evil priests, crooked cops, corrupt FBI agents, and downright psychopathic politicians, then there can certainly be "good" criminals and mafiosi."
---
And THIS particular statement and viewpoint is exactly how I perceive this world as well. In my estimation of life (and I've lived a long and very active one, I'm no babe in the woods) is that there are very few things that are strictly "black and white" in this world. In 99% of situations and things, there is always much more "shades of gray" than stark "black and white."

And as I've aged and grown wiser, I've also modified my viewpoints based upon lifes experiences.

I only wish that I had been the one to word that phrase I posted above. LOL..... it was genius in my opinion. But I have to give credit where the credit is due. And that is Mamaluke!

So kudos to him for his wise views and words.

I do not personally know Tony Scotto, or any of his personal family for that matter. But from what I've read over the years, and judging from the wonderful way he raised all his children (daughters and sons alike), he seems like a very intelligent fellow who grasped opportunity with two hands. Committed some misdeeds along the way and made some shortcuts to get where he had to go. But he doesn't seem to have been a vicious guy, or a 'hoodlum' per se.

And despite his alleged 'button' which for me personally means nothing in the larger scheme of things, he got caught for some labor law violations, served his time in the can, and then went forward to live a great life with his family. He never again got in trouble with the law. And by ALL accounts was a highly respected New York citizen for the remainder of his life (by cops, politicians, businessmen, and regular Joes alike).

He lived to 87 years old. a ripe old age by anybody measuring stick, was a multimillionaire, helped his children to become professionals in the business world and media, etc., etc.

Anthony Scotto lived one helluva life.... I only have one question. Where do I sign up? Lol

Thats a great article about him. He was a very sharp guy. And very well liked by all, on both sides of the aisle

Wouldn’t Anthony Scotto be the last of Carlo Gambino’s captains to die?

Well he was one of Carlo's youngest capos (if not THE youngest) so that makes sense.

Didn't Gotti have a hard on for him and stripped him of all his power ??

Gotti actually did him a favor...He lived the last 30 years of his life worry free from the government !!

You said a mouthful. He did the same to many other old timers and younger guys alike from previous administrations. It was a blessing to them all. (and they know it too).

From what I've heard is that he was truly loved as a human being. Always had a smile and a kind word. He was richer than almost everybody, but he was one of those very few guys who deserved his good fortune.

Stop being a crybaby Louie. You ain't finding shit on Instagram. There's 3 dozen Information in files you could hit back with and you bring up Instagram and Lawsuits. I take it back. You're not the Gene Borello of BB you're the fucking Fredo of BB
