Question for the forum.... In your opinions what are the most mobbed-up residential "suburban" communities in the greater New York metropolitan areas?

I am NOT talking about neighborhoods within the Five-Boro's per se: Bensonhurst, Morris Park, Howard Beach, etc.

I am speaking about the outer borough and outer county communities of Nassau and Suffolk out on Long Island, Lower and Upper Westchester, Rockland County, Northern New Jersey, etc., etc.

I would like to know where you guys feel most of the mob's members and associates hang their hats at night. What towns, neighborhoods, etc. I thought this would be an interesting thread.

Elizabeth, NJ was the stomping grounds for the DeCavalcante family.

Bensonhurst. Isn't that the most in the country?

It was always one of the more heavily concentrated mafia neighborhoods, because it was overall one of the most heavily populated Italian areas of the city. Today its changed a lot, but still has a solid contingent of mafiosi.

I can tell you with certainty that neither cedar grove or verona is “ mobbed up”. East rutherford is not either.

To give you a good example of what I'd considered a mafia saturated neighborhood would be the Long Beach, Lido Beach, Atlantic Beach Peninsula of South Nassau. Also the Massapequas in eastern Nassau. Each of those sections was heavily laden with mob guys who moved their families to the suburbs. If you didn't have 25-30 hoods making their home in each of those towns you didn't have one.

There were similar areas to the north in Scarsdale, Yonkers, etc.

Of course there are many other areas not as saturated that still qualify such as Westbury, Glen Cove, etc. But collectively they are all what I'd consider Cosa Nostra area resident locations. In some towns they operated. In most they only hung their hats while continuing to do business within the boroughs. But all had heavily mafia presence. A few towns still do.

Finding an italian in bayonne today would be tough enough, never mind finding a mob guy. Bayonne is turning black amd hispanic.

The suburban (I specifically left out the Urban Italian-American areas) Italian-American towns here in Jersey who have a presence some larger than others are- Belleville, Bloomfield, Nutley, East Hanover, Clifton, Florham Park, Totowa, Toms River, Brick, Manalapan, Old Bridge, Cherry Hill, and Washington Twp in South Jersey off the top of my head. I am sure there are others I forgot. Anytime you have a town in Jersey with a large Italian population theres going to be some presence, in most cases a guy running a sports betting package or giving out loans.

In the year 2020 here in Jersey its more like a cultural thing of guys from the same background/neighborhood hanging out at an Italian owned sports bar/restaurant runnings sports bets and loans than what it was back in the days were guys got involved to survive poverty because they had no other choice. Its hard to explain if youre not from around here. Its basically 3rd and 4th Generation Suburban Italian-Americans watching out for themselves and the people they grew up with here, keeping things in a tight inner circle of close family and friends.

There's still a lot of Irish and Italians in Bayonne, especially in the nicer sections further away from Jersey City. The section of Bayonne by Jersey City is where you will find the Blacks, Hispanics, and Arabs. Bayonne is always going to have whatever the newest wave of immigration the the USA is because its always been where immigrants came to live when they first arrive in the USA. When my Grandfather came to this country from Italy he ended up in Bayonne.

As of 2015, 15% of Bayonne was Italian. 20% in 2000.

The italians in bayonne are very old who never left. There is no action at all. Belleville is shot. I had relatives in both belleville and bayonne. Totowa is also changing alot. You have a lot of hispanics from paterson moving in. The italians are spread out in all different communities to where there are very few italian communities. East hanover and florham park have a lot of italians as does toms river and brick.

Yes, most Italians nowadays like other ethnicities have dispersed to the suburbs. Very few "dedicated" heavy Italian sections. But as I say, Massapequa and the Peninsula housing Long Beach are two that have held up somewhat.
But it's largely over. As Italians made more money and gained traction financially, and their Little Italy's throughout the 5-Boros, Jersey, and elsewhere changed ethnicities, they were encouraged to leave as well and spread out.

NYC still boasts roughly 20% Italian population, LI boasts 25%. Several areas in NJ do as well. The State of RI actually holds the highest rate of populous claiming Italian background at somewhere around 1 of every 2, or 1 of every 3 people in their state having Italian blood. Thats amazing! NE in general is heavy Italian.

Big Vince Filipelli lives, operates, and pumps iron in Cherry Hill and George Borgesi used to live in Cherry Hill during his first marriage, before his major prison stint. The Jews in Cherry Hill though are very large and prevalent, Hoodlum is correct. I also think there’s a major split between East and West Cherry Hill. I used to have a lot of business in Cherry Hill in 2013/2014 and was there almost 5 days a week at some points, so I got to know the area a little bit from a 10,000 ft view.

Hood, there isn’t a Mrs Staino anymore. There are two former Mrs Staino’s with the latest ex wife being the Asian one who cuts hair in South Philly. She was the one whose hair salon in South Philly was famously held up by Vietnamese thugs about ten years ago around Christmas time if I recall correctly.

Just because a large percentage of Italians live in a specific town doesn't mean it's "mobbed" up. Plus define mobbed up? The tons listed above most of them are a shell of what they were 20 years ago as far as "mobbed" up and the towns posted above is more wishful thinking or just based on old facts. In reality does "mobbed up" even apply anymore? The facts are there is limited influence in these towns because of the mob in any of them. Not trying to argue with anyone else posts just saying it's my feelings the "mobbed up" is more wishful; thinking than reality.

Awhile back I did a piece on just this particular subject. Really it was focused on the Long Beach-Atlantic Beach peninsula and it's adjoining towns that housed droves of mafiosi. The mob's "migration" to this suburban area started in ernest right after WWII. Here is the direct link. I thought you guys might get a kick out of it.
