Its just my opinion but in italy every member of mafia, ndrangheta or camorra understand that soon or later should go on the lam or hide in bunker or whatever need for dont be caught by LE. While in the us mafia apart Casso and Amuso no wiseguys tried to hide and continue to run their bussiness.
In the cali case,in italy the bosses live in house that are fort resses protected by groups of bodyguards.
Same thing in Canada with many mobsters killed out their home with no bodyguards.

Attanasio fled to Sint Maarten, where he maintained a residence. In December 2004 Attanasio was arrested after they received a tip that he was residing on the island.

First of all its different mentality, they don't have the control of the area like they do in South Italy , you can't be hiding for a long time in US.

Many ndrangheta bosses have bunker with all the conforts hidden in all the Calabria so they can hide when the LE pressure become too high.
Enrico Ponzone a patriarca associate was on the lam for 28 y in idaho, so I think that was more a cultural issue.
