I've read of hundreds of cases where the main reason a guy ends up flipping instead of doing time is because they're very disappointed his friends or bosses never end up paying a dime to his family while he's facing some time in prison. Was paying hush money or hazard pay ever common with the American mob? Cause I've rarely heard about it. Maybe a friend could pick up a guy's money out in the streets but otherwise that's it. I think that it's fundamentally wrong to not help out an incarcerated member's family and it ends up causing a lot of discontent and thus a lot more reason for them to flip, because they're broke and their family is broke.

This practice used to be common in the Napolitan Camorra, Italian Mafia, even Colombian cartels, pretty much everywhere... you pay the guy's family some acceptable fee meanwhile he's in jail, in a way you buy his loyalty and ease his mind, making it easier for him to focus on doing time. And for a huge organization it doesn't cost much, even for a big enough crew. I believe the benefits outweigh the cost. A lot of people became rats because of their disappointment at their friends leaving them broke, just out of spite. Willie Boy Johnson comes to mind, but I remember many other cases. Do you think hush money would actually help keep the rats to a minimum?

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

Depend,if the guy had family and know that his family won't starve, maybe, the problem is the long sentences,if a guy take 5 y is a think another if take 10 or 20 y.
I think that the genoveses wiseguy accept pleas for don't do much time in jail and the leadership make sure that will have a share of his money that had on the streets.

Honestly I think that's a cop out for guys that flip. Everybody knows what being locked up means for you financially. I think it still goes on. I'm sure Dom Grande takes care of the Nicodemos.

Its not hush money but gotti was on wiretap at the ravenite in 1990 how he had to pay 100k each for appeals for joe piney and joe gallo his one time underboss and consig. Maybe he felt bad cause he made them go to trial when they probaly could have negotiated sweet plea deals cause there age probly 5 yrs or less. Think they got 15 n 10. Old law like you do 1/3 or 1\2

I remember reading in The Family Secrets book that little Jimmy Marcelo was paying Nicky Calabrese's family monthly money. While Nick was in prison. They used this at trial against Little Jimmy.

Why do I remember this? Because it is fucking rare!

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. But it adds to the low morale already faced by a guy looking at 5, 7 years in prison.

It all depends on the rackets a guy has , if he has a steady union gig and you are a skipper you keep you shit and the acting takes a cut .

Same deal with shy you keep you shy the guy running it takes a cut , unless it's your boy then rarely he may say it's all yours and wife and kids .

But rackets that take mussel or very hands on time you may lose it till you get out or for good.

Tommy gets money through his guys and rackets , he was very hands on all the way up so I am sure he has his hands in a few long term arrangements .

You are right. Tommy Shots is getting jack shit in prison. Whatever he had is all he has. Maybe he's got a business or some skylock money he keeps. Anything else goes to whomever takes over.

I think if a guy like shots is younger and only gets 2-10 years, and his family and crew KNOW he's coming home and KNOW they gotta deal with him, I think it's different. They are helpful and protect him more.

But if you 20+ years, or life or you are old and might die in jail....YOU get zero.

According to Vinnie Teresa:
"That's the way things had been in the New England mob with Tameleo and Patriarca. There was a feeling of loyalty and responsibility to each other. No one in that mob failed to make money, that's why there was rarely any real trouble internally. If his men went to jail on a rap, no matter how long they were away for, it was the responsibility of the mob to take care of them. Even when Joe Barboza was in jail, before he made the mistake of threatening Patriarca, he got his $900 every week. The money was delivered to his wife just as though she was drawing a pension."

And here Murray Humphreys mentions that they were paying him $600 a month while he was locked up:

Humphreys and Gus Alex also discuss making financial arrangements for a guy about to go to prison:

I don't think it's really a case of hush money, just the right thing to do.
