My top 5 favorites:

2. Rear Window
3. Psycho
4. The Birds
5. North By Northwest

I'll be seeing Rope soon, hopefully. -Pat

WOW! I was just over on Amazon and they have OOP Hitchcock Criterions. I'm not talking about buying ones from users. Why would Amazon still have them? -Pat

Because of the amount of true classics he's done (more than anybody else no doubt), it's entirely subjective as to what is his best. It all comes down to personal favourites:

1. Rear Window (****)
2. Psycho (****)
3. Foreign Correspondent (****)
4. Rope (****)
5. Shadow of a Doubt (****)
6. Rebecca (****)
7. Vertigo (***)
8. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) (***)

The Lady Vanishes is a brilliant early film from Hitchcock, and his second best British film besides, what I consider to be his third best, The 39 Steps (though I need to see Foriegn Correspondent, which I taped from TCM a long time ago...).

Amazon most likely bought a lot from Criterion right before they went OOP, knowing that they could make a lot of money of off the sales.

I love Alfred Hithcock movies. Among my favorites, which have been mentioned are: Psycho and The Birds. One maybe not as known that I found interesting was "Strangers On A Train".

I liked his tv show as well and used to watch it every Sunday night.

I've seen several episodes and enjoyed how Hitch would always make an aperance on EVER SHOW. And he'd always say things that were quite funny but they were also very... dark...

One of the greatest directors ever and one of my favourite. A genius, an artist.

My fav movies (no order):

Psycho
Notorius
The birds
Vertigo
The suspicion
Rebecca
To catch a thief
Rear window
The Paradine case (with one of the most beautiful Italian classical actresses, Alida Valli, in a dark lady role)

and, of course, the TV series.

Out of all I've seen, The Birds is his second worst film.

1 Vertigo (1958)
2 Rear Window (1954)
3 Psycho (1960)
4 North by Northwest (1959)
5 Strangers on a Train (1951) (British version)
6 The Birds (1963)
7 The Wrong Man (1956)

I'm awaiting the Criterion boxset with 39 Steps, Rebecca, Notorious, etc.

I don't think that "The Birds" is one of his worst. It is an inventive film with great acting cinematography and direction. It just isn't his best. I'm dying to see Marnie.

Ranked Films:

1. Vertigo (1958) - 10/10
2. North By Northwest (1959) - 10/10
3. Rope! (1948) - 10/10
4. Lifeboat (1943) - 10/10
5. Spellbound (1945) - 10/10
6. Psycho (1960) - 10/10
7. The 39 Steps (1935) - 10/10
8. Rebecca (1940) - 9.75/10
9. The Birds (1963) - 9.75/10
10. Rear Window (1954) - 9.5/10
11. The Lady Vannishes (1938) - 9/10

Of course, worst-case Hitchcock is better than best-case most other directors. That's the auteur theory for you.

I just received my set of Hitchcock's films that I bought on EBay from a Chinese seller. The set has 34 of his major films (see list below) and it cost only $39.99!!

The boxed set is titled in Chinese, but all the films are in English, and the picture quality is as good as any single Hitchcock DVDs that I already have. All the individual disks are labelled in English.

Here's a pic of the boxed set:

The movies included are:

1:Dial M for Murder ( 1954 ) 01:44:49 Color
2:Foreign Correspondent ( 1940 ) 01:59:53 B/W

Great buy, SC. Is anything like that even available in the West? Which films from the list haven't you seen yet?

Mick -

I've never seen anything like this being offered before. I already owned about 5 or 6 Hitchcock films, and wanted to buy another 3 or 4, but when I saw this offer I just jumped at it.

I've yet to see:

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934)
Rich and Strange
The Skin Game
Murder
Young and Innocent

Rebecca is Hitchcock's masterpiece that I liked the least, if that makes sense. I have it, and will be watching it again soon; it's also showing on the big screen at my local cinema next month.

Of the films you haven't seen, I've only seen The Man Who Knew Too Much. Haven't seen the remake so I can't compare, but it would take some doing to beaet the 1934 effort. Top-notch stuff.

Enjoy!

I just found a 2 DVD set containing 4 Hitchcock folms (2 sided DVDs)for only $5.99 at Blockbuster.

The 4 films are The Secret Agent, The Lady Vanishes, Sabotage, and The Man Who Knew Too Much (the first version). All are in b&w.

Just thought I'd give you all a heads up. $5.99 is a great deal for 4 Hitchcock films.
