This is a topic I have been researching for a while. I have no firm opinions on the issue (yet), but a recent post ("England most corrupt country on earth!") prompted me to continue my investigations.

Roberto Calvi (nickname: God's Banker) was an Italian who owned a private bank and handled a lot of money and transactions for both the Vatican and the Italian Mafia, or so my research has revealed.

When his bank ran into financial problems, Roberto Calvi was mysteriously found suicided (by hanging) under Blackfriars Bridge on the River Thames in London (pronounced 'Temms').

The death was more than suspicious, and there are some very good YouTube documentaries on the subject.

I lived for a long while in London, hated it, and I would agree that it is the most financially greedy, money-hungry and impersonal place on fucking earth, despite their pretend values of politeness, tradition and conservatism.

At this stage, I just want to know what other OC researchers think about any alleged links between the Mafia and the Vatican. Thanks in advance.

Archbishop Gilday in GF 3 was based on the real life Archbishop Marcinkus who was involved in the Banco Ambrosiano scandal and was an associate of both Calvi and Sidona. There were also rumors that he was involved in P2.

There's also an Italian movie about the scandal Marcinkus is played by Rutger Hauer.

Mafioso Giuseppe 'Pippo' Calò ordered the murder and four people delivered the banker to his killers. These are businessmen Ernesto Diotallevi and Flavio Carboni, his Austrian girlfriend Manuela Kleinszig and Calvi's driver and bodyguard Silvano Vittor.

It's actually alleged that the late Magliana gang was involved in the Calvi affair . I do believe I've read that they had a falling out with Calvi due to the Banco Ambrosiano not returning their laundered cash .
