Alright cool thread idea Don V.

Top Five Bands:
1. Talking Heads-most influential band of the past 20 years, they NEVER made a bad album. Their masterpiece, Remain in Light, is simply unbelievable. It is ften considered one of the best albums of all time.

2. Pink Floyd-great talent, hugely influential, and they made some awesome music. Dark Side of the Moon is undoubtedly one of the best albums ever.

3. The Clash-arguable the best early punk band, although of course a case can be made for the Sex Pistols or Ramones. London Calling is amazing, and most of their other albums are great too.

4. Jimi Hendrix Experience-although short lived, they made some of the best music ever. Are you experienced and Axis: Bold as Love are both stellar albums. To top it all off, they have one of the best guitarists of all time in Jimi Hendrix.

5. Grateful Dead-Jerry Garcia is another awesome guitarist, and the rest of the band was good too. Great at improvisation, and they wrote some awesome lyrics to go along with it all (just for the record, I'm not a deadhead, nor do I use acid or any other drug :p )

Other great bands: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, The Who, Led Zepplin, Barenaked Ladies, Green Day

Top Songs (I'll do it like Don V.)

1. The Great Curve, Houses in Motion, Once in a Lifetime, And She Was, Television Man, Don't Worry About the Government, Psycho Killer, Stay Hungry, Tentative Decisions, Making Flippy Floppy, Girlfriend is Better, Burning Down the House, I get wild/wild gravity, I Zimbra, Cities

2. Wish You Were Here, the Great Gig in the Sky, Welcome to the Machine, Have a Cigar, Comfortably Numb, Money, Another Brick in the Wall (pt. 2)

3. London Calling, Rudie Can't Fail, Koka Kola, This is Radio Clash, Rock the Casbah, White Riot, I fought the Law, Death or Glory, Tommy Gun

4. Hey Joe, Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary, Bold As Love, Voodoo Child, Are You Experienced, All Along the Watchtower

5. Friend of the Devil, Casey Jones, Golden Road (to unlimited devotion), One More Saturday Night, Touch of Grey, Mexicali Blues, Truckin

Top Albums:

1. Remain in Light-Talking Heads
2. Speaking in Tongues-Talking Heads
3. Stop Making Sense-Talking Heads
4. Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd
5. The Wall-Pink Floyd
6. London Calling-The Clash
7. The Clash-The Clash
8. Are You Experienced-Jimi Hendrix Experience
9. Axis: Bold As Love-Jimi Hendrix Experience
10. Skeletons From the Closet-Best of Grateful Dead

DV- Since you like Metallica so much, you should try to listen to Misfits. Their old stuff may not be that similar to Metallica but, I believe that Metallica likes them a lot, hence them covering a few Misfits songs. Just a suggestion.

Zeppelin II is IMHO their best album, though I like IV as well. Physical Graffiti is good simply because of "Trampled Under Foot" and "Kashmir".

I think everyone should listen to Misfits, being or not a Metallica fan. my suggestion for the first songs to look for are "Last Caress", "Die Die My Darling" (two of the ones Metallica covered) and "Dig up her bones"

BTW, here is my favorite lead singer: Jello Biafra from Dead Kennedys

We are talking about Classic/Punk/Grunge rock, not poser rock/hip hop

Limp Biskit is a shitty poser band. The lead singer is a wigger. They have no talent, and yes I have listened to them. They are piss-ant and Led Zep is godly.

I think that there's is nothing wrong with that. I'm a sort of Kiss fan (the early years 1973 up till I was made for loving U, after that it sucks) but the band i used to play in played a sort on NU-Metal aswell so .... modern but not bad.

Well if that is you're opinion DV i can and will respect that but ... i don't agree. If you had said so about Korn then you where right in your opinions.

But how about the Deftones ..... an other I like very much and i think that they ar very talented, especially the leadsinger.

Anyway back to the topic at hand. I got Van Halen's "1984" album along with Led Zeppelin's "How the West Was Won" which is a 3 Disk collection of rare live songs that Jimmy Page found while researching for the Led Zep DVD.

All I have to say is classic. Van Halen's songs are great, especially 'Jump', and 'Hot for Teacher.'

But the real treat is the 3 Disk Led Zep CD which has EXCELLENT preformances for Immigrant Song, Stairway to Heaven, Black Dog, Dazed and Confused, etc.

Hell, some songs like Dazed and Confused are extended to 20+ minutes with their great solos.

5 Fav Bands (in no particular order):
1) Molly Hatchet
2) Lynyrd Skynyrd
3) Aerosmith
4) Bad Company (the original w/Paul Rodgers)
5) Ted Nugent

5 Fav Songs from Above:
1) Dreams I'll Never See (A lot better than Greg Allman's original!)
2) Freebird (What else?!?!)
3) Uncle Salty
4) Feel Like Makin' Love (Kid Rock butchered that classic!)
5) Stranglehold

Honestly, I've got too many favs to name (e.g., Led Zep, Creedence Clearwater, The Scorpions, Outlaws, Blackfoot, etc.) both bands and songs, but this gives you an idea of what tickles my ears. Good thread, btw.

The best rock song ever (IMHO) is "Sympathy for the Devil". Perfect in so many ways, music and lyrics. The characterization is perfect, the music goes into different grounds and Satan and his story is the best song ever.

Among my favorite rock songs:

The Beatles- Yesterday, I am the Walrus, All you need is love, Imagine (J. Lennon),
The Rolling Stones- Sympathy for the Devil, Paint It Black, Ruby Tuesday
CCR- Fortunate Son, Have you ever seen the rain?, Bad Moon Raising, Proud Mary, Cotton
Fields

I still need to hear more from tis abds. I also love Stuck in the middle with you, Stairway to Heaven, Layla, Knockin on heaven's doors, etc., etc.

Hell yes, I don't agree it's the best. But Sympathy for the Devil [both versions] are kickass and the lyrics great. I like the creative adding of the African Mambo sound into the rock.

Listen, dot, this is your last warning. I'm not sure whether to change your name to something else, or just to kick you off the boards. It WILL be one or the other. Your behavior will determine what I do, so, it's now up to you...

PS: Okay, it was the first to start. The confusion was too much. It's not really your fault, picking a name so similar to one that's already in use. Normally it would be okay if there was a bigger different than a full-stop character. I hope you like your new name. If not, let me know what else you'd prefer. But, don't forget the suspension warning.

I studied Italian for 2 semesters. Not once was a "C" pronounced as a "G", and never was a trailing "I" ignored! And I'm from Jersey! tongue lol

Hope you don't mind an older person's perspective. I know we've had favorite rock band topics before but good idea to branch out to the different genres and sounds.

I couldn't possibly list all of the greatest and/or most influencial bands/artists, because I know I'd leave so many out.

Among my personal favorite artists are: Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Eagles. Personal favorite "songs" that to me are true classics: Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California, You Can't Always Get What You Want, The Wall.

What's interesting is, that although before Rock & Roll, there was different kinds of music, I doubt that there is such a variety of sounds in any other gnere(i.e. punk, Heavy Metal, Grunge and many I never heard of I'm sure) that still fall under the "Rock" category.

In my day there was Motown & The California sound; The Righteous Brothers were known as "Blue Eyed Soul", all extremely popular with their own distinct "sound;" all different, yet all R & R.

What were Sinatra, Martin, Bennett called in their day, before R & R.,...just pop artist I think. Music has really branched out hasn't it? We've come a long way baby!!!!
