'Ndrangheta, the mystery of the last repentant of the Papalia clan: he speaks for two years with the prosecutors. Then he thinks back and warns the people he has accused
A man of the Calabrian clan, who for over thirty years has settled in the territories southwest of Milan, has decided to collaborate with the Prosecutor's Office by illustrating the internal dynamics of the powerful clan. He does it for almost two years, putting dozens of names on paper. After that the repentant repents of having repented. He thinks about it and contacts some of those people put in the long minutes. He tries to apologize and explains that his choice of him was dictated by a grudge against them. He decides, at least so he explains to people close to him, that he will soon go and report himself. Who is this man? His name, at the moment, remains covered by a big omission

A well known figure of organized crime in Milan, Giusepe "Pepè" Flachi, 70, recently died of Parkinson's disease in a clinic where he was under house arrest for treatment. Born in Reggio Calabria on October 19, 1951 but raised in the northern suburbs of Milan, Flachi experienced all stages of the underworld in the Lombard capital.
With his friend the boss Franco Coco Trovato, from Lecco, Flachi was one of the first Calabrian mobsters of importance to impose themselves in Lombardi. He manages drug trafficking in an 'Ndrangheta-Camorra alliance.
Arrested on Italian demand in the Cannes region in November 1991 for a deadly settling of scores, Flachi was extradited to Italy in 1995 and remained imprisoned until his release in 2010. On his release, the boss suffered from Parkinson's and was given as "finished". However, he is back in the criminal world: Flachi was again arrested in March 2011, with his son and right-hand man Davide, for racketeering.
"Pepè" Flachi is sentenced to 20 years and 4 months in prison in this case. The former "Boss of Comasina" ends his days between prison and the hospice.

THE SENTENCE / LOCRI

“European 'Ndrangheta Connection-Pollino”, imposed 172 years in prison
Twelve sentences and five acquittals for a criminal group that was vanquished in 2019

The Locri court has inflicted a total of 172 years in prison on twelve defendants, at the bar in the trial that resulted from the “European 'Ndrangheta Connection-Pollino” investigation, confirming the accusatory framework of the anti-mafia prosecutor of Reggio Calabria, led by the prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri.

The highest punishment was imposed on Maria Rosa Campagna and Serafino Rubino (30 years each). Antonio Barbaro (7 years in prison), Domenico Barbaro (8 years), Giuseppe Campagna (15 years), Luciano Camporesi (22 years and 9 months), Carmelo Vincenzo Gerasolo (2 years and 6 months), Giovanni Giorgi (14) also convicted years and 8 months); Cesar Steven Linares Ramirez (10 years), Antonio Pizzata (7 years), Vincenzo Salzano (12 years) and Giorgio Violi (14 years and 4 months).

Five acquittals also concern Salvatore Santo Cappello, Roberto Esposito, Domenico Pelle, Giuseppe Pelle and Giuseppe Strangio. The blitz, taken in December 2019 between Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, shed light on the projections of the 'Ndrangheta in Europe and South America, as part of an organic reconstruction of multiple criminal activities carried out on the national territory and abroad, by various exponents of established and dating families of Calabrian organized crime, operating mainly in the heart of Locride.

Another powerful boss returns to freedom.

The boss of Platì's' Ndrangheta Rocco Barbaro has been a free man since yesterday. In the Supreme Court, according to what the Milanese edition of Corsera reports, the sentence to 16 years in prison has partially fallen: he was found guilty in the first degree of mafia association and fictitious registration of assets such as the "Vecchia Milano" bar in Corso Europa del Lombard capital. The accusation for “U Sparitu”, as he was nicknamed, is of a fictitious title to a third person: the previous management of the bar had contracted numerous debts, in particular with the State Monopolies. Not only that, Barbaro controlled the new owner, a fellow countryman from Platì, in Calabria. Rocco Barbaro was included in the list of the thirty most dangerous fugitives.

'Ndrangheta: Pittelli returns to house arrest
Benefit granted by the Court of Vibo Valentia

(ANSA) - VIBO VALENTIA, 09 FEB - The lawyer and former senator of Forza Italia Giancarlo Pittelli returns to house arrest.

The benefit was granted to him by the Court of Vibo Valentia in acceptance of the petition presented by the defenders Salvatore Staiano and Guido Contestabile.

Pittelli is a defendant in the "Rinascita Scott" trial, underway in the bunker court of Lamezia Terme, resulting from the investigation conducted by the Dda of Catanzaro on the 'Ndrangheta clans of Vibo Valentia and is also involved in the "Mala Pigna" investigation on some organized crime groups of the Piana di Gioia Tauro. A few weeks ago Pittelli had started a hunger strike.
Pittelli, who is among the best known Calabrian criminal lawyers, had already obtained house arrest for the two criminal proceedings in which he is involved. The benefit, however, had been revoked last December after he learned of a letter he had written in October, sending it to him by post, to the Minister for the South, Mara Carfagna, in which he asked her for help in resolving the matter. linked to his legal affairs.
The Minister's secretariat sent Pittelli's letter to the inspectorate of Palazzo Chigi which, in turn, sent it to the Catanzaro mobile squad, then reaching the Catanzaro DDA. The same Dda requested and obtained from the Court the aggravation of Pittelli's prison condition for violation of the prescriptions imposed by house arrest.

'Ndrangheta, the hands of the clans on the procurement of the railway network: 15 arrests.

The 'ndrangheta Arena-Nicoscia clan of Isola Capo Rizzuto(Crotone) has made "solid and historic alliances" with business groups that "manage the awarding of contracts for the armament and maintenance works of the Italian railway network directly from Rfi Spa under a substantial monopoly".

"Ventura has all of Calabria , Morelli has all of Campania, Esposito has all of Sicily , Rossi has all of Northern Italy ”, reads an interception in the proceedings of the investigation.

A reportage from Calabria is at the center of the first page of "Le Monde" , which in a long article tells the hunt for the fugitive bosses of the 'Ndrangheta conducted by the special units of the carabinieri among the dangers of an inaccessible territory, as documented by the beautiful photograph that accompanies the reportage. There are 305 wanted Calabrian mafiosi who in the last 30 years have been captured by the military in their incessant commitment .

The ferocious organized crime of Rosarno wanted him dead already in the past, it was the year 2013 : the planned attacks , however, failed. Until the evening of December 15th , when Giuseppe Salvatore Tutino disappeared without a trace. A month later, on January 17 , the discovery of the charred body inside the car taken with a shotgun and buried in the countryside of Calimera, in San Calogero, in the Vibonese area .

INVESTIGATIONS ONGOING

The hands of the 'Ndrangheta on the coast south of Rome, 65 arrests
It is hypothesized that he had taken control of the territory on the coast south of Rome, also infiltrating the public administrations

Maxi blitz at dawn today, Thursday 17 February, in Rome and in the province. 65 people arrested. The carabinieri of the provincial command of Rome carried out the order, at the request of the district anti-mafia management. Among the 65 people, some of them are seriously suspected of being part of a Mafia-style criminal association.

According to what emerged from the investigations, they would have formed a local group of 'Ndrangheta with a stable base between Anzio and Nettuno, and it is assumed that they had assumed control of the territory on the coast south of Rome, infiltrating public administrations and managing international drug trafficking operations. Searches and kidnappings are still in progress.

From Reggio Calabria to the Roman coast, they had worked for years to infiltrate the social, economic and political fabric of the territories of Anzio and Nettuno. At the head of the criminal organization there would be Giacomo Madaffari, but also important supports from exponents of historical families of 'Ndrangheta originating from Guardavalle, namely the Gallace, the Pertinace and the Tedesco.

The investigations show the existence of two associations aimed at drug trafficking, one headed by Giacomo Madaffari and the other by Bruno Gallace, both with high financial and logistical resources, as well as the ability to import large quantities of cocaine from South America.

The 'Ndrangheta clan had strengthened its power over time by exploiting the ability to import large quantities of cocaine from South America, to then infiltrate local administrations through the management and control of economic activities in various sectors, from fish to management. and waste disposal.

Hollander, or anyone else: How and when did the 'Ndrangheta get into cocaine in a big way? I can see heroin, since they are nearer to the countries that grow it, but cocaine is bought in from South America, how did they form ties there? The heroin dealing goes way back, but the coke has me curious.

Money they got from kidnapping , they invested in drug trade , they were still small back then , but after fall of Sicilian Mafia they were there to fill the void , also all of Italy were focused on Sicily & Sicilian mafia , that allowed 'Ndrangheta to grow almost untouched by law enforcement.

They did have a true fall , they were insanely powerful during 80s , they had connections to P2, Vatican and to the most powerful people/masonic lodges in Italy at that time. They still do control almost every aspect of life in Sicily , but they are nowhere close to what they were during 80s

Some of the early drugtraffickers in the 90s moved themselves to Colombia and Venezuela guys like Salvatore Miceli, Roberto Pannunzi and Pasquale Cuntrera where they made first contact with the cocaine cartels.
More and more went there and now 'ndrangheta have drug brokers in these countries, typically in Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

But even those other groups you mention also aren't what they once were. For Matteo Messina Denaro to be able to stay on the run for going on 3 decades now, Cosa Nostra still has to be extremely, extremely powerful. There's no way around it. He's one of the most wanted men in the entire world. There's proof that he's even been visiting many other countries too which is nothing short of extraordinary in this day and age, and it's even been rumored that he has visited the United States. I don't know if that's true, but whenever he's finally caught, I think the revelations that come from it will blow your socks off.
