I read it was an attempt by Casso to undermine Vic's leadership, as Patty was Vic's messaggero. That was the word on the street at the time.

Just talking out loud but, any though on Casso ordering some of the hits he ordered that seemed questionable because they were guys within the family that may have had the juice to challenge for the top spot while Vic & Gas were on the run. Patty Testa although a long shot to have run a family was well known and well respected, tight with many top level guys in several families and was a notorious earner. Same way I've always felt about the Bruno Facciolo hit, it always seemed like it was done because he was a powerful guy who could have rallied troops behind him. I feel similarly about Pete Chiodo, he became too feared, and too much of an earner and may have been seen to challenge Casso for authority so was ordered dead. If Casso really did have the "crystal ball" which we now know that he did, it makes you wonder why he killed so many well reputed and respected guys who were never actually thought to be informants via Eppolito and Carracappa.
The only thing they feared about Chiodo, was that he was gonna flip. He was under multiple indictments at the time and the Administration didn't feel challenged by him in that respect. Testa was another matter. It's still a bit of a mystery. I believe Casso whacked him for 2 reasons, maybe 3. Number 1, he was jealous of Patty who was very close to Vic and was a fast rising star in the family. Number 2, chaos was going on, everyone was flipping and Casso was trying to whack anybody not in his close circle, and Number 3. He wanted to say Patty's murder was committed by the Gambino family over some old wounds of when he was an associate of that family and use it as an incentive to take out Jr. Gotti and Nicky Corozzo.

Lastorino had some balls. He walks in Testa's car dealership during working hours and kills him. He also put 10 rounds in Bobby Borello in front of his house in broad daylight. Pretty sure Lastorino only set up the hit, always heard James Froggy Galione(whose dad Ralphie Wigs did the hit on McBratney and later killed by Gotti) did the hit.
