Former Philadelphia mafia boss turned government witness Ralph Natale is set to tell his life story in his upcoming book Last Don Standing: The Secret Life of Mob Boss Ralph Natale.

According to reports from Deadline he has also made a deal to have The Last Don Standing which hits shelves on March 21, 2017, developed into a feature film starring actor Frank Grillo. The new book from author and longtime New York Daily News reporter Larry McShane along with producer Dan Pearson contains Natale’s accounts of the mafia takeover of Atlantic City, Jimmy Hoffa’s final days, and boxing corruption including fixing of matches between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston.

Natale also chronicles his rise through the ranks of Cosa Nostra including his stints in prison and his decision to turn on his fellow wiseguys and cooperate with the feds. Natale was part of a faction led by Joseph “Skinny Joey” Merlino during a bloody mafia war with boss John Stanfa for control of the crime family. The arrest of Stanfa in 1994 allowed the Merlino faction to take over with Natale assuming the duties of boss and Joey serving as underboss. According to Natale, he became the don of Philly but Merlino associates later described him simply as a front boss for Merlino who was trying to avoid attention from law enforcement.

After striking a deal with the feds Natale would take the stand and testify against Merlino during a 2001 racketeering trial. He was then sent to prison for 13 years in 2005 and entered the witness protection program after his release in 2011. There has yet to be any kind of timeline for the film but more information should be forthcoming. The new mafia book should have some interesting takes on how things were from Natale’s point of view and the mafia movie to follow may be just as intriguing.

I hope they aren't going with that as a book cover. It's hideous.

Why would anyone think Natale is a good person to do a movie on? He was in prison for the entire Scarfo-Stanfa era. That's when all the real shit happened. He spent four years on the street before turning (1994-1998). WTF would they do a movie on? He got released from prison, became boss, got played by Merlino then became a (substandard) government witness.

In my opinion, he comes off as the most full of shit cooperator with an incredibly inflated sense of self worth. In Previte's book it was said he had all these big ideas that never worked. Dude was always a blowhard.

They're probably going with the angle of old school wiseguy coming out of prison trying to cope with the new age gangsters who don't respect the old rules, etc. It's actually a unique story for a mob movie.

Except the fact that he didn't care about the rules. Was the guy even made in a legitimate way? He folded like paper.

These mobster movies are getting so shitty. Even black mass the whitey movie great looking well acted boring ass movie with a shity story most book are not meant to be films. Black mass perfect example. This winter hill hitman john martorano sold his rights to a film studio for like 100k that was years ago theres never a film coming out same will happen to ralph. Like you said guy was a made guy for 4yrs. Theres still abunch of guys on the street made for 40plus. I keep saying it about tommy dels ex wife and 2sons book mobfather that could be a movie the father leaves the kids and ex in south philly the scarfo mob is still there. The guy runs of into wpp with the new wife and the kids go threw all types of bad shit surprised scarfo didnt have them hung from a street light they end up testifying as a defendants witness to call there dad a piece of shit liar do it right and that could be a cool film.

Even George Anatasia said that he never understood why the Feds agreed to a deal with Ralph Natale, because he simply wasn't a good witness. Natale really didn't do any damage to the Philly mob. Firstly, the jury didn't connect with Natale because of his arrogant attitude on the stand. Plus, after Natale's release from prison in 1994, his parole forbade him from meeting with other mobsters (and he could only go to Philadelphia for work related purposes). So although he ordered hits and whatnot to the Merlino faction, nothing got done the way Natale intended it (other witnesses contradicted Natale's testimony). I believe that Merlino was simply using Ralph from the start, but I'm sure Natale would never admit it. In the end it was Ron Previte who was the stronger witness and thus buried the Merlino faction.

As for the movie, I'm sure it's going to be full of Natale's inflated stories and lies and what not.

I don't understand: Ralph Natale was jailed under all the Scarfo reign and once out was made by merlino (that wasnt the boss) only for have a puppet for keep the LE attentions away from him. And when flipped dont even menaged to nail merlino and got 13 y. Why people should what a movie with this plot ?
Natale failed as boss and as a rat.
