Associated Press story

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Six West Point cadets are facing charges they conspired to distribute drugs, the U.S. Military Academy said Friday.

One member of the Class of 2016 and five members of the Class of 2017 were "similarly charged" under military law with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and wrongful use, introduction and distribution of controlled substances, according to the academy.

West Point officials did not say what drug or drugs were involved or provide details about the charges, which are the first step in the court-martial process.

But Greg Rinckey, a lawyer with expertise in military law who is not involved in this case, said the charges are "very serious" and seem to point to a conspiracy to bring drugs onto a military installation.

Evidence collected during an upcoming pretrial investigation will be provided to a senior military officer who could dispose of the cadets' case or recommend trial by court-martial to the superintendent.

A West Point spokesman said Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen could not comment because of his involvement in the process.

The cadets, who are on administrative leave, are seniors Joshua Bobo, of Lafayette, California; Jaelen Gadson of Alexandria, Virginia; Tevin Long of Richmond, Texas; Christopher Monge of Coplay, Pennsylvania; Jalen Swett of Nashville, Tennessee; and Jared Rogers of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who is in the Class of 2016.

West Point and the Army did not provide names of their lawyers. Phone messages left for Gadson, Long and Bobo were not returned Friday. Numbers associated with Rogers, Swett and Monge were not in service.

This is not the first time multiple cadets have faced drug charges at the storied academy on New York's Hudson River. In February 2007, drug charges were filed against four cadets who failed a random urinalysis.

that's sad....... west point is a revered institution. great generals have came from there, and its certainly makes parents proud when they have a son who graduated from west point. I guess there is nothing sacred anymore.

Nothing ever was sacred binnie. I guarantee drug use has been going on there since forever. Its just that in this day and age of information being spread quicker and faster than ever before institutions are forced to deal with their problems openly instead of covering up or sweeping them under the rug.

well, Scorsese of course you are right, but I think after viet nam the military has been going downhill ever since, and that's when I lost all faith in the military, but west point did have some distinction when I'm was growing up.

west point still has distinction and is still revered and will continue to be. doesn't change the fact that there are drugs on every campus across the nation. from harvard to west point to your average state university. somebody has to fill the void.

Dont be too rough on the US military. Its still probably the best and most powerful in the world. The Vietnam era seemed to be a time where again people had more information to question government and its policies.

Binnie,

I had some buddies who went to the service academies..a few at Annapolis. They have like an hour and half of free time each day, wonder where any cadet, midshipmen etc has time to run drugs but agree with Scorsese and Rollin.

I'd bet that during prohibition, there were guys running bootleg up there...sure they were caught and it was never reported to the outside world.

Think there might have been arrests recently but swept under the rug.I think the public disclosure of these guys was to prevent overdoses and deaths at the other service academies. Making it public to slow down or curtail the other ones selling drugs.
