As an Essex County guy, I'm interested in knowing more about Pee Wee and his crew with the Genovese. From what I understand, he was well liked and fair. His headquarters was the old Finish Line on Roseville and I believe he had a club around 4th Avenue area. You don't hear alot about him in any books really other than he hit Little Pussy. Was he powerful? Moneymaker? Any enemies?

Can anybody elaborate on Pee Wee? I'm sure some guys from the Avenue could add some info! I drive by his house in Belleville almost everyday and always wonder about him.

Before my time but I'd like to hear more info on him as well. i live in bloomfield and still hit the ave for calandras, luigi's and I'm going to the tavern tonight as matter of fact. I was locked up with old man DiNoia's brother. Poor guy, he's like 80, csnt walk, gets locked up for like Pissing in public and petty shit like that and he still does the county thing every 6-12 months at his age. I talked to him about the old days but he was like in and out of it.

How was possible that a man with the surname De Phillips was a genovese capo ?
Maybe the surname was de filippi ?

I was thinking the same thing Furio, I guess the family name got changed at Ellis Island or something, I've read that this happened a lot back then.

Furio a lot of Italians changed their names when they came over. It is said that people at Ellis island changed the names to make them more Americanized but I heard that's a myth and people did it themselves. Not sure. A good example... The creator of the sopranos David chase's last name is actually DeCesare but his family changed it. A good friend of mine from Passaic last name Rainer was actually Rainieri, Pasquin from Pasquini (the family owned car dealerships and they sold out) my father always had some not so nice things to say about Italians who changed their names to sound American. Not sure how DePhillips got his changed but you're right it was probably DeFillipo or DeFillipi.

Belmont ... Belleville ave and franklin ave ? There's the golf course and the the old hospital or whatever it was. I'm just trying to figure out where he lived. I used to live off washington on Rutgers before we moved to Bloomfield. I'm a big Michael v's guy. I used to live off their eggplant, fresh mooz, and roasted pepps sandwichs.

Or maybe the people wrongly transcripted the italian surnames. Al capone dad had caponi surname but was written capone because the e was spelled i. For example the name giuseppe is spelled giuseppi. At the end I think that the italian that americanizated their surnames was few respect the case in which the surname was wrongly transcripted.
And for me changed the surname is a betrayl of the origins.

Exactly what I was taught by my father and I agree. You're name is your history and what you come from. Why would anyone want to change that? To each his own I guess.

Pasqualino Marciano aka Pat Marcy do it for his political career.
Steven Talarico aka steven Tyler maybe because the surname Tyler is more easy to remember that tallarico.

It was hard to get a job here in Jersey as an Italian immigrant back in the day. A lot of New Jersey Italians "Americanized" their last names. It was also common to go by an Americanized version of your first name : Giacamo- Jack, Giuseppe - Joseph, Carlo- Carl, ETC. My grandfather didn't Americanize his last name because it was one of the more American sounding Italian last names, but a few of his brothers went by the more American sounding first names. They were called by their more American sounding first names in their day to day lives but still officially went by their Italian first names and spoke Italian at home.

Bobby-

Have you been to that new bar on the Avenue in Bloomfield that's simply called "The Bar" yet? I've been meaning to try it out one Sunday for Football.....If you've been before, how is it?

Do you think we can stay on the topic of the thread? The changing of the names is an interesting conversation, but doesn't tell me anything more about Pee Wee. Thanks everyone.

Haven't been there Dante. I rarely go out for football anymore. My son has swim class 1130 Sunday mornings, then on the way home I pick up bread and pastries and head home for football and Sunday dinner with the family. Sorry Don Cheech. We get sidetracked sometimes. If anyone has anymore in depth info on Pee Wee I would appreciate it as well.

Sorry Don Cheech but when you mention someone from the neighborhood then guys like me, Belmont, NJCapo, and BobbyPazzo who are familiar with the neighborhood and not the person that was before our time (At least before me and Bobby Pazzo's time-cant speak for the others), we then transpire to start talking about the neighborhood-its not an affront to you or do we mean to be disrespectful

I get that...Threads deviate at times...Since we've brought it up, I've heard I know relatives of Pee Wee have used the spelling "De Fillipis" or De Phillipis"....Don't know if that's an Italian name or not.... Furio?

Pee wee was 100% italian. Another common italian name is DeSantis.
Pee wee's real last name was put on the butcher block at ellis island.
