He is appearing in a Staten Island theather on Oct 16.

Just a discussion of his life an career.

Normally I don't go to Staten Island unless to watch a soccer game. But I might go to this.

I have some good memories of him. We used to go to his movies when they first came out. He used to appear live and do 10 minutes in each movie house when his movies opened in New York City.

His moves were funny, but nothing like those 10 minute live performances. They were really funny.

So I never forgot the good time I had at those.

In the mid 70s my wife and I went to the opening performance of A Chorus line on Broadway. I remember driving in a parking lot to park my car. In front of us was a Rolls Royce Franco Harris was driving remember him Pittsburg steelers.

Any we sat on the second in the next to last seats in that row at the Schbert theather.

The last two seats were empty. Light go out to start the show and two people come in and sit in those two seats. It was Jerry Lewis and his first wife. I am seating next to the wife.

I am thrilled because immediately remember those 10 minute live shows. His wife was sitting next to me. Then I saw the ring on her finger. Then I thought that had to be worth 20 thousand dollars. Then I thought I could take it and get away before anyone could stop me.

Then I thought my wife is with me can't do what you really want to do when the wife is around. So i sat and watch the show. At intermission he again left before the lights came back on. Same think after intermission I guess he did not want his presence to interrupt the show.

Maybe I will go and tell him how I admired him and his work with MD. I don't think I will mention my ring idea though smile

Lewis is 90. He started out as a teenager doing a mime act, and was just about starving. Then he met and married his first wife, who was a singer for a big band, and making decent money. She carried him for several years until he hooked up with Dino in AC and became huge overnight.

Thank God for the Martin/Lewis act, one of the hallmarks of American comedy.

Unfortunately, in the mid-50s, my parents invested heavily in the Martin/Lewis coloring book.

I recently saw a segment on CBS Sunday Morning about Jerry Lewis. He is still funny, bright and sharp as a tack. Showed no signs of slowing down whatsoever.

olivant - I am curious about this coloring book you spoke about above. What's the story?.. if you don't mind sharing. I remember Lewis and Martin comic books but not a coloring book.

Tell you s story about Martin and Lewis you might not know. Lou Costello saw them he liked them. At that time Dean Martin had a messed up nose maybe from boxing I am not sure about that.

He paid for a nose job for Martin. They sign a contract with Costello. When they really hit it big. They wanted out of their contract with Costello. They had a big problem getting out of his contract with him. After a while when Costello had the advantage then he decided to let them out. I can't remember the particulars about it.

The very first movie I ever saw in a theater was a Martin/Lewis film. "Pardners", one of their last movies together, came out in the summer of 1956 when I was five years old. It was a very hot summer night, and nobody had air conditioning then so my dad decided to take the family to the local theater so we could sit in the cool air conditioned theater for a few hours. I don't remember much of the movie but I DID know who Martin and Lewis were (from television) and I was really impressed by how huge the theater was. To this day, I still prefer watching a movie in a theater rather than on tv.

First time I saw Martin & Lewis was on the Colgate Comedy Hour (TV) in 1950 or '51. They were great. After that, I couldn't stand the other regulars (Bob Hope, Eddie Cantor, etc.)--I wanted M&L.

It's a line from the Dick Van Dyke Show.
