Why did this gesture make tony so mad, it's clear from the dialogue that tony had paid numerous times for fin and meadows meals and if I'm correct this is after tony had even gotten fin a job so it's pretty clear that fun knows tony is the breadwinner and patriarch he wAs just trying to do a nice thing, maybe show he is also capable of paying for his gf and Tony's daughter, not a bad thing....why get so insulted?

It what Tony does, pays for things, especially when it concerns his daughter. I think he was more embarrassed than angry that Fin paid for the meal behind his back.

Lets not forget that was the period when Tony and Carmela were seperated, I'm sure that also had something to do with it.

Tony has a big ego. He has a alpha male personality so of course he isnt gonna be happy when the boyfriend of his daughter pays for him being that he is a mob boss. Now if it was one of his underlings it would be a different story

i think in tonys mind that the boyfriend was mocking him. Tony believed that he was the breadwinner he could pay for his family that was his job the idea that someone else would have to pay for his familys meal to him is embarrassing and emasculating thats why he reacted so strongly

Not connected with scott or anyone at gangsterreport

Sorry for the confusion

I don't think any of you have a clue as to the Italian way of paying a bill. Male, female, in this case, mob boss, it's all about showing how successful you are. There are usually fights among adults when the bill comes to the table as to who is paying. You can get your arm stabbed with a fork if you take that bill away from someone.

Also, an Italian daughter belongs to her Italian father until the day she is married. Usually, even after she is married the father will still flip the bill.

The boyfriend or son-in-law is insulting the father when he tries to pay. You just don't do a stupid thing like that. You take your cash out but your father-in-law will stop you and tell you forget about it your money is no good here. I'll take care of it. If he does let you pay then that means he has a slight respect for you and likes you a little bit.

And that's why Tony was pissed

well i come from a italian family and he was NOT insulting tony. This is a tv show not real life. The reason tony got upset was simply because of his ego and narcissistic attitude.

JCrusher, I'm sorry if I offended you by saying you don't have a clue. You do get the ego part. It's also about pride and respect and knowing your role as a boyfriend in your girlfriend's Italian family.

Going out to dinner with a surfer dude from South Orange County, CA, and an Italian father from Jersey. The scene was real life for me. lol It's very authentic. Imo every Italian father would feel insulted just like Tony did. Tony yelled and reprimanded Fin and threw money on the table because of his ego (just like you said.) Any other Italian father would not let that boy pay either! Money would be handed to him, he would be spoken to with less yelling and he would then understand that he is not to pay. No Italian father would put up with what Fin did imo. And since I do not know any Italian male without an ego tongue it would go down EXACTLY the way it was done in that scene, with the apology at the end!!! That was the real deal right there.

Watch the scene.

(Lol You can't surf in Mission Viejo)

This will probably be my last post in the Sopranos section lol I'm here for fun not to argue

you didnt offend me. But i think you may be mixing up television with reality. In real life tonys reaction wouldnt happen to a regular father and being italian doesnt matter. Now we do fight over getting the check but its friendly fighting not childish ego bullshit like tony did in the show

Good. I'm glad that we came to an agreement on a couple things because I feel that we come from completely different backgrounds. smile

Except it's not an Italian thing, that's pretty much everyone whose not an ungrateful shit. Of course you make the offer to pay, it's universal. Come'on, how many girls (on a date) reach for their wallets knowing the guy is going to stop them? It's not even about actually wanting to pay so much as it is making the gesture because that's just being polite.

When I go out with my wife and kids I always pay.

When the kids invite my wife and I out to dinner or another occasion. I let them pay, but I leave the tip. Then I ask the waiter if he is happy even though I already know the answer.

I go out with my friends We fight for the check.

I go out with my wife's friends. It is embarrassing they divide the check then they talk about how much to tip. I hate that my wife's friends are nice people I hate that as well.

You know what's funny. All of my kids are doing pretty well. My youngest is ok but not as good as the other three.

But my oldest son is doing very well. He has all the little toys that people who are doing very well have.

He likes to play softball when he has any free time. He is many teams depending on the time he has. None of the guys on any of his softball has his kind of money.

He doesn't throw his success in their faces. But I know people he likes that they know he is doing well without actually saying it.

It's just the alpha male thing, I suppose. Tony is the leader of the pack, the patriarch and the provider. By paying for the bill, Finn basically tried to usurp that position in Tony's eyes, even though the poor guy was just trying to be nice.
