Hi, this is my first post on GangsterBB. I wanted to know more about the New Jersey crew/faction for the Bonanno crime family, as I know for a fact that Bayonne and Jersey City have been a Bonanno family stronghold for many years. Joe "Sammy" Sammartino Sr. is the current faction boss, but I want to know who ran the crew from 1920s to the present day.

There were two Bonanno crews at one time.

Newark area crew.
Salvatore Grippi, brother-in-law to Nicola Schiro. Capo from 1931 to 1948. Stepped down due to health reasons.
Nicola Schiro, Capo from 1948 to 1956. Former Boss of the Bonanno crime family, fled to New Jersey after the Bonventres threatened him. Stepped down and moved back to New Orleans.
Antonio Riela, Capo from 1956 to 1976, and 1984 to 1987. Member of the D'Amico family of Newark till 1938 before transferring to the Bonanno family. Broke down to soldier in 1976. Stepped down in 1987.
Angelo Salvo, Capo from 1976 to 1984. Appointed by Carmine Galante in 1976, remained in Manhattan most of his time being a Capo. Died.

Carmine Galante crew.
Joseph Ziccarelli, Broke off from Galante crew. Capo from 1960 to 1983. Died.
Gabriel Infante, Capo from 1983 to 1987. Killed.

Both crew would merge with Joseph Taormina as Capo from 1987 to 2003.

"I have this Nightmare. I'm on 5th avenue watching the St. Patrick's Day parade and I have a coronary and nine thousand cops march happily over my body." Chief Sidney Green

Where do you get the info that Grippi was a capo? And Schiro was retired after 1930. He wasn't from New Orleans. He moved back to Sicily, where he died.

A member of the Bonanno crime family's ruling panel who was born and raised in Jersey City's Marion section will be sentenced in Brooklyn next week for loansharking offenses, officials said.

Joseph Sammartino Sr., 56, aka "Sammy" and "Sammo," of North Arlington, was charged along with a number of reputed mobsters in a 33-count indictment on June 21. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion, officials said. He admitted conspiring with associates to collect a high-interest loan from a man identified as "Sal from Staten Island."

Authorities say Sammartino is a Bonanno family captain and he operated his crew out of New Jersey. A source said today that Sammartino's headquarters is in Bayonne.

"He was very hot tempered, but he was a wannabe tough guy," a source said today of Sammartino who did time in New York for attempted assault. "He was pretty tough with his hand. He could handle himself. He was a street kid that came up the hard way, but he was a wannabe."

Numerous alleged Bonanno associates were named in the indictment alleging crimes including racketeering, assault in-aid-of racketeering, threatening to commit a crime of violence in-aid-of racketeering, bank fraud, illegal gambling, extortion and perjury.

Those charged are Joseph "Joe Lefty" Loiacono, Frank "Big Frank" Pastore, Anthony "Little Anthony" Pipitone, Anthony "Scal" Sclafani, Paul "Fat Paulie" Spina, Manny Bana, Peter DeFilippo, Frank DeRosa, Sebastian DeRosa, Richard Lotito, Vito Pipitone, Joseph Spatola, Frank Terzo and Natale Terzo.

The DeRosas and Pipitones have pleaded guilty to various charges and the other cases remain open, said U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York spokesman Robert Nardoza today.

Sclafani reported to Sammartino in the Bonanno hierarchy and federal documents quote Sclafani threatening a federal informant, who was also a mob member. The informant was behind in his own loanshark payments.

"You're lucky we don't saw you in half and leave you in the woods," Sclafani told the informant, court documents say.

Today Jersey City Police Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach recalled responding to a shooting in the Marion section in the early 1980s and finding Sammartino had been shot in the face through a door in what appeared to be a setup.

Sammartino's son made headlines in 2001 when he testified against a ruthless Bonanno murderer who killed two men above a Tonnelle Avenue car dealership in North Bergen in 1993.

Sammartino Jr. - who is thought to be in a witness protection program - testified Elvis Irizarry slit one man's throat from ear to ear. Irizarry once beat up Sammartino Sr. so savagely that Sammartino Sr. defecated in his pants, according to press reports.

Sammartino Sr. faces up to 2 years in prison when sentenced at 11 a.m. on Oct. 15 by U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas Garaufis in Brooklyn.

Genovese dominate JC , have big legit businesses there , especially garbage , recycling and trucking plus check cashing and unions, some towing. Hoboken and Bayonne are basically on top of JC so some might look at the whole area as the same - Hudson county .

The political environment is very favorable to their core rackets , with major money coming out of the area. Plus some guys plowed money into real estate that were huge scores , for sure the result of tips , and there is a lot of construction. Also remember the ports are in JC with alot of longshoreman there . With the union pull and trucking, they are basically part of the business culture.

Basically JC is saturated with white collar rackets - real savy operators , whereas Bayonne is probably one of the top blue collar rackets around in gambling and shy. You won't read a lot about JC and LCN, probably the result of the nature of the rackets , allowing guys to hide behind business but it is a very important area. I could be wrong but I don't see any other crew then the one now making any major inroads - too important , would have to clear some real hurdles .

What about Newark? Which capo(s) in the Genovese family's New Jersey crew have control in that area?

Honestly who knows with that family

Best guess would be Devita but most of those guys have had things there - Tony P , Nini , SD , LaScala , Chuckie but only a small group of people probably really know. My gut tells me LE is frustrated

According to the 2004 NJ OC report, the Prisco and Bruschi crews operated in that area.

According to the same report, the Fiumara (now Coppola), DeVita, and Bruschi crews all operate in that area.

This guy might be a killer and good with his hands but I'm pretty sure I read a article back where some other tuff guy beat the shit out of him and he pooped his pants they published this in a major new paper article. I'm 99% sure. Think the guy who beat him turned rat. If that's true other wise guys must talk shit but I don't no the guy maybe he's nuts.
