Cleveland/Akron Soldiers Tony and Jimmy LaFatch take out Chicago's Outfit Guy Nick De John in San Francisco back in May 1947.

My wife and I personally knew these guys (Tony and Jimmy) - I always think of what you hear over the years from various sources that "is it true" or they are "just doing numbers" and they really aren't involved in the bigger stuff. But rumors and facts start coming to light over the years.

I don't think the LaFatch brothers were involved. They were just suspects.

Nick DeJohn was the nephew of Vincent “Don Vincenzo” Benevento, one of the big shots during the early 1940's on Chicago's North Side. When Ricca and Campagna were waiting for a trail, Benevento together with Lawrence Mangano from the west side, wanted to take over the Outfit but their main obstacle was Accardo. So the North Side was split into two factions, one led by Ross Prio who supported Accardo and Ricca and the other faction was led by Benevento, Oneglia, DeAngelo, Vitale and DeJohn. When all of DeJohn's associates were killed, he fled Chicago and went to San Francisco, were he lived under the alias Vincent Rossi. According to eyewtinesses, on May 9th 1947, DeJohn was seen that afternoon with another Outfit member and narcotics trafficker known as Leonard Calamia driving around San Francisco and shopping. Later they had a meeting in a bar known as LaRocca's Tavern on Columbus Avenue, wich was a mob hangout. They met with Sebastian Nani,a gangster out of Brooklyn, few San Francisco Crime Family members and another Chicago Outfit member from the North Side Frank Tornabene who pledged his allegiance to Prio. At the end of the meeting, DeJohn had been garroted or strangled with heavy braided fishing line, allegedly by Calamia. The only member that was speared from the wrath of the Outfit was DeJohn's underling Paul "needle Nose" Labriola. He was later killed in 1954 for different reasons. After the murder of Dejohn, James DeGeorge stepped down as boss of the North Side and Prio took his place.

Theres a story that Calamia allegedly sang about the situation, but some say that he gave false informations

Thanks Toodoped

As always your information is always very informative. I knew that later three were charged and then the prosecutor drop the charges on a promise he made to the Police Investigators that they would be later recharged with better evidence and additional charges. The prosecutor would later become Governor of California. Edmund "Pat" Brown

Information on Trial of the Three Charged in Nick De John Murder

I don't know how reliable the above source is - but it is interesting to say the least.

The brothers were not involved. Leonard Calamia and Charlie Nicoletti were the men that Chicago sent out there, Mario and Nani were only there to put DeJohn at ease.
