I am creating a fictional character, an Italian gangster but I can't figure out a name. I have several choices so please give your opinion on what combinations sound good.

First names:

Alphonse "Al"
Carlo "Charlie"
Carmine "Sonny"
Francesco "Frankie"
Gaetano "Sonny"
Giuseppe "Joe" or "Beppy"
Remo
Salvatore "Sammy"
Tommaso "Tommy"

Last names

Crocetti
D'Angelo
Giovese
Lecchese
Leone
Pulciano
Santorelli
Sindone

Go with "Frankie Gangster" which was the real nickname of a real gangster.

Please leave Remo and Francesco alone. One sounds illiterate, the other too avante garde and artistic.

Of the list you provided, the best combos are probably...

Carlo "Charlie" Crocetti, and Carmine "Sonny" Leone.

I think fictional Italian gangsters have been overdone. Unless you're breaking new ground or exploring an aspect of that life that hasn't been covered, going to be hard for your character to separate from the pack of the stories, books, films,tv shows being cranked out mobsters from that background. And of course the classic stuff,GodFather ,Goodfellas ,Sopranos, etc cast large shadows over everything that comes after them.

If you want to do it, what is the backstory of the character? Modern character ?, Born here? more than likely will have an Anglicized first name. Where in Italy is his family from? What are the common surnames from that region?

It's just for me and writing practice and I don't mean to publish it. But I'm just not a guy who can pick a name off the top of my head. I'm very picky with names.

It takes place during the Prohibition but the character was born in the States. He's from Campania.

I just decided to put all these in two hats and draw and whatever remains last, it will be the final decision.
