Who were that main players in Canada back in the early 70's .

I am really interested cos a family member sold a very large piece of property to him/them and what my uncle told us was the boss of Canada wanted it and bought it .

Like a thousand acres of some of the best land around this area.

I wish I paid more attention to the things that were said ,but I did not .But I do remember some stuff he told us boys..

If I can get a name I may be able to look through some papers and see.

In the early 1970s the main players were, Vincenzo and Giuseppe Cotroni, their brother Frank would become important during the war. Nicolas Dilorio, Luigi Greco but he was semi retired and was using Nick Rizzuto and borrowing Pasqualo [BadWord] to help run the Sicilian faction of the family. Rizzuto brother in law Domenico Manno acted as Nicks replacement when Rizzuto went to New York. Pietro Sciara, Paolo and Frank Violi. Another key player was Leonardo Caruana who worked with Greco and Rizzuto, he would be deported from Canada in the mid 1970s.

Thank you,, I have to do some research .The property is sill sitting there undeveloped .We went through a building boom five or six years after it was sold to them.

For example a one acre lot in 71 was 2,500 $ in 80 it was 15,000.00 in 88 it was 25,000.00. now it is 35,000.00 to 50,000.00 and up if it sits on the streams.

The thousand acres are still undeveloped with a 12ft. fence all the way around it.
The property has several streams and is a great mix of pine ,oak, cedar.
For the life of me I can not understand why it is sitting through all these years.
I am embarrassed to say what my uncle sold" it for ,but he was property rich tax poor.

He did hold onto a lot of the best property's and with that came casino gambling and made many" in the family very rich.
My fathers company which was left to me, sits on one of those pieces of property.

But whom ever this guy is he is very rich to be able to pay the tax on that property and not think twice about developing it.

When I tell you it is worth a fortune it is ....

If you know what year it was sold in, you can narrow the list down. A lot of the guys you hear from up there, didn't start climbing the ladders til the war in the mid 1970s or later.

Instead of making a thread about my Canada question I'll just post it here. Was Canada always considered a more violent place for the mob or is this something more recent? These last years saw plenty of murders. Was it like that in previous decades as well?

I only know from people in the life that they would could get anything they wanted through Canada.
They did not have any hassles getting what was needed.
And it never got crazy like the border down in Mexico where the other OC get there things of choice..

But there was no doubt from my uncles and fathers mouth that there was a strong organized family there.
And it was no secret that they were down here doing legitimate business in my families world.

I would say it's relatively recent. I just think Canada (and Montreal in particular) stands out because it's happening right now... But if you look at the grand scheme of organized crime and the inevitable violence it results in... Nah... It's probably not really any better or worse than anywhere else when there's friction in the OC world.

Maybe you could argue that mafioso in Canada tend towards violence as a convenient method for dealing with issues more often because it lacks the stringent organized crime laws found elsewhere. But, I think that would be a hard one to prove as a direct cause/effect (although I'm sure it is a significant factor).

No, I think it's just a time and a place thing. It'll blow over eventually. Things will flare up elsewhere. Certainly the recent violence in Canada's italian OC is nowhere near the levels of Italy in the 80's and 90's.

I think the problem for Canadians is that there are far fewer mafia groups nation-wide, they're mostly in two provinces, and thus there is very little national impetus to deal with the issue, and, I have noticed an unfortunate trend with quebecs provincial police to basically sit on their hands until their is a big public demand to put these guys behind bars (exactly how it was during the Quebec HA/Rock Machine war).

Toronto has a more bloody history then Montreal, but no Canada has not been that violent. The 1970s, the biker wars in 1990s, and the current state now are violent, but tamed compared to the US.
