from the time they were first organized to the present how many members must have passed through the various families? Some of the more active groups seem to have faced relentless attrition. But still keep there numbers up even to the present day. It must be many thousands that at one time or another have passed through the bigger families.

Well, Owney, I have always heard the number 3000 thrown around as far as how many made guys there were nationwide, at different points. But would have to say that throughout the decades, easily 10,000 or more. But I don't have that concrete evidence, so I could be wrong.
