I just ordered it. Was wondering everyone opinions on the book. I'm so intrigued by that time period of the mafia.

I'm so intrigued by that time period of the mafia. it was a great read. lots of info on the Genovese family, from the beginning. he and vito Genovese were huge heroin dealers. keep in mind he was the first real rat, in 1963 his information was truly valuable because that criminal J edgar hoover, could no longer deny there was a mafia. and its all taken from his book,

That's what excites me about the book. I know everything came to light from valachi during the heyday of the mob. Looking forward to the book.
Thanks binnie for the response.

A good book and well written. But . . . .
Here's the most telling thing in the entire book to me: Joe Valachi had been living in Yonkers for his final years on the street. He was a just a soldier, yet he regales us with all of these tales about the formation of the Commission and yadda, yadda, yadda. Yet there's not a single mention of Cockeyed Nick Rattenni, who was already the Genovese skipper in Westchester at the time of Valachi's arrest, and living less than a mile away from him in Bronxville at the time.
Now, there could be several explanations for this:
a) The Westside was always cautious and it's possible that he didn't know Nick personally? Okay, but he knew every Boss on the Commission. Think about that for about three seconds.
b) He knew Nick personally but didn't want to throw him under the bus? Okay, but he threw everyone else under the bus. Think about that for about three seconds.
c) The FBI put the lion's share of the information into Valachi's mouth, but they weren't quite aware yet of just how powerful Rattenni was, so they didn't bother to "help" Joe remember him? Ding, Ding, Ding. A winner.
Now, I'm not implying that Valachi was full of shit or anything like that. But if you think that both his memoirs and his testimony weren't greatly influenced by the Government, you're out of your mind.

Pizza I brought this topic up before in a thread about the book Deal with the devil. It says in there that a lot of information that they had at the hearings with Valachi was from illegal wiretaps and Greg Scarpa. It seems like Valachi got the credit because Scarpa was an informant and the wiretaps were no good because of the law at the time. So I see what you mean if that was all the truth. Valachi may have been first major rat but a lot of the heavy information was not from him.

So I see what you mean if that was all the truth. Valachi may have been first major rat but a lot of the heavy information was not from him. Look, it was a good book, especially for the times. And I've re-read it several times over the years myself. Now, there's not much available online about Cockeyed Nick. But he was like a brother to Frank Costello, and held so much sway in the Bronx and in Westchester (from Yonkers to White Plains), that Genovese didn't even try to break him after the failed attempt on Costello's life. The guy was already a captain while Costello was the Boss. He lived a mile away from Valachi. And Valachi didn't bother to discuss him at length? It's because Scarpa didn't know anything about him, and the Feds didn't have any illegal wiretaps on him. How else do you explain Valachi not mentioning a powerhouse captain who lived in his own backyard? It's because he was too low on the Totem Pole to deal directly with Nick himself. Now, there are those of the opinion that everything the Feds put out there is Gospel, and they're entitled to that opinion. But everything I just posted is absolute fact. Draw your own conclusion.

I agree that's why I enjoy this forum. Many valued opinions on this topics after reading the book.
Just seems like too many try taking credit for what was not theirs.
Amazon said book will 've here tomorrow so hopefully it is.

One other thing. Who deserves more credit for the charts and stuff during the hearings. The government, Valachi, or Scarpa?

valachis captain was tony bender [ Anthony strollo ] he goes into detail about strollo, who was close to Genovese. Please, Binnie. That's not the point. That Rattenni was left out of the book and testimony speaks volumes about Valachi's actual knowledge, and what the Feds told him to say.

Wait a minute got the book a day ago. Should be finished tomorrow? How many pages in this book does it have pictures? I think it took me three weeks to read the Godfather. I could never do it today. I would fall a sleep after one page.
