This rank ever exist? Gotti was an acting captain before he was made.

I don't think so. It seems odd that anyone could rise to the level of acting captain (or even soldier for that matter) without being made. Either you have the button or don't.

It doesn't make any sense. When you're a soldier, you're made... you can't just be "temporarily made" or "acting made member"

With acting captain it's different because you don't have to take a different induction to be a capo, the boss just says so, and you're now a capo.

If we're talking before 1975 when the books were opened then who knows anything could have happened. There were guys out in the streets back then that carried A LOT of weight and would otherwise be soldiers and captains, but as a technicality they were still associates.

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

There are associates who, in some cases, carry as much weight as captains....it always gets back to the samething...how much money do you bring in...if you're a big earner it doesn't really matter if you're made or not...there are many examples of this.

Exactly, and this is most prevalent in the Genovese family and their top garbage guys. If you're just a run-of-the mill captain, who merely attained the rank through a lifetime of service and not as an earner, just TRY laying your hands on unmade cash cows like Ponte, Milo, Galante or Franco. See what happens.

So, while the rank of "acting soldier" doesn't actually exist, there have been plenty of instances of associates carrying more weight than made guys, usually by being directly on record with a skipper. The four guys I mentioned above (and there are more, but those four have all lost their carting licences at one time or another, and been written about extensively, so I don't mind posting their names), all reported directly to Matty at one point or another (and again, Matty's dead, so I'll post it).

But to a smaller degree, just like everything else has been pared down in White Collar LCN (like garbage, construction and demolition), it still goes on today.

Extortion btw, I think what you're saying comes from Sal Polisi's Sinatra Club which I've personally, at least, always regarded as pretty doubtful.

The case is simple. From 1957 to 1975 when the books was closed, some gangster that deserve to be made can't be,Gotti was the Fatico crew acting capo and Accetturo was even made in the early 70s acting capo of the lucchese jersey crew and was made only in the 1976 (accetturo say so in the raab's 5 families). From 1975 to now someone that was a good earner and half italian can be made,so the "acting soldier" never "existed".

I've always found it doubtful myself. I think John's larger than life persona on 101st Avenue may have given way to that perception.

However, that claim predates Polisi's fantasies by at least twenty years. As a matter of fact, I think the same claim was made in the original version of "Mob Star," by Capeci and Mustain (1988), and in "Goombata," by the far less reputable Volkman and Cummings (1990), although they did a nice job with "The Heist."

Certain high profile Irish and Jew gangsters who dealt with the mob were probably in such a rank.

The likes of Coonan or Jimmy Burke for instance.

Yeah serp , I could have heard wrong but I hear the Persicos have a ton of legacy money and a bunch of younger pups that will keep them going for awhile and it's not the blue collar stuff that is their main priority . A lot of business owners here but again I could have been misinformed

DB :They still have the know how ,but they can only go as far as LE allows them .And yes Carmine has some old loyal people .and old money is good money, I think that's the best way to put it.
