Is there any stories of capos, underboss, consig or even bosses that have done hits, been involved in hits or been an enforcer etc? Seem to remember sessa being part of a hit team in 92 to take out scarpa and he was consig for Colombos?

Couple of examples:

Antonio Caponigro (Consigliere) - Killed Angelo Bruno

Sonny Red Indelicato (Capo) - Involved in a hit

Its pretty rare for the administration to carry out hits, but you hear of a captain doing some dirty work every now and again. It used to bewilder me why a captain who probably has about 40 guys working for him who could do the muscle work but now I think I understand that most of its about clandestine knowledge. For example, Anthony Caponigro would rather kill Angelo Bruno himself rather than get a soldier or an associate to do it for him, as one of those underlings might run and tell Bruno about the plan in order to get in his good graces, so it is not worth Caponigro taking that risk of himself getting whacked.

Although sometimes it does make me wonder my a soldier who is given the order to kill some low-level hood dosen't just get one of his associates to do it for him in order to avoid FBI scrutiny. You usually here more about soldiers doing hits rather than associates and I always found that a bit strange.

It's pretty much common knowledge carmine persico participated in hits after he became boss of the colombos , also consigliere carmine sessa was also a killer after being named consigliere

A large majority of outfit bosses were involved in murders , the majority of the hireachy were present for the spilotro murders

Actually sessa was in the hit team who tried to kill vic orena. Remember from the scarpa and Persico mobsters episodes. Was caponigro a capo in the phili mob? Remember reading the genoveses had made him think if he killed Bruno he could become boss but intact he was whacked too cos it hadn't been sanctioned by the commision

I always feel uneasy when I hear about the Caponigro murder. I know he was a murderer and a scumbag and it's a very treacherous business, but it's horrible the way the Genovese family played him. If a bullet in the head wasn't enough, they even tortured him for a long time and put money up his box. What a shit life, and the guy was a capo too.

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

Caponigro was consigliere, not that he was close with Bruno or anything. He was just Calabrian and it was supposed to keep the peace. Also think Alfred Salerno did the hit. But hey in Philly, Scarfo was definitely present for the Vincent Falcone hit and he was high up the food chain.

This was more common outside NY. Sammy Gravano was the exception not the rule. In Chicago, just look at the Spilotro murders. Half capos, half soldiers. In KC supposedly Tuffy DeLuna participated in the shooting of Carl Spero and his two brothers (Underboss). Buffalo is a good example. A real estate agent was flirting with Danny Sansanese JR's wife so a big hit team went out and killed him. Sansanese Sr, and Todaro Sr and a few other high ranks killed him, along with Todaro Jr who made his bones that night.

Ricca and Marcello were alleged to participate in a few after their rise to the top

Bruno didn't need a consigliere in the traditional sense. Caponigro had that spot cause he was an earner and a major drug trafficker. Fuckin guy gave the okay to let his sister get murdered, who cares that Funzi played him, good riddance, guy had no honor.

Did they really torture Coponigro? Seems pretty pointless. I think that they may have killed him normally, and then messed up his dead body a bit so when someone finds him it looks like he got tortured and sends the message not to whack a boss.

Bruno always had a consigliere though. Prior to Caponigro it was Joe Rugnetta. Caponigro was high up in the Calabrian faction, after Mr. Joe died, he got the nod to run that side of the family. Alfred Salerno was most likely the triggerman in the Bruno hit, not Caponigro.

And post mortem wounds showed that he was tortured, beaten and strangled.
